Tutu and Ballet News

Tutudacious! The Ballet World is Going Bonkers!

Darlings! I’m here to tell you, the world of ballet has been having a total, well, tutudacious day! As we all know, it’s April Fool’s Day – and boy, have the ballet companies pulled out all the stops! Let's just say, tutus have never looked so…well, frankly, utterly ridiculous!

My darling friend, Gloria, at the Royal Ballet, tells me that the entire company spent this morning trying to fit themselves into tutus designed for, and I quote, “The Elephant and Castle Ballet” – oh, Gloria does make me giggle! I do hope they managed to get them on – though, it's hard to imagine a pas de deux with a pair of dancing elephants!

The Bolshoi has also joined in the frivolity. They’ve replaced their classic tutus with – get this! – giant marshmallow tutus. Oh, honey! Apparently the idea was to evoke, I quote, “the ephemeral and fluffy nature of a ballerinas dance”. The image is, frankly, alarmingly sweet – though I wouldn't turn down a go at that sugary creation.

It’s not just the tutus that have been going bonkers. The Royal Ballet has also had a new "deconstructed" Swan Lake. You wouldn’t believe what they've done with the staging! All the props were completely upcycled: the swans are now giant plastic bags – very environmentally sound, but definitely not very graceful! Oh, honey, you can just imagine those tutus, floating like balloons, catching the wind...

  • But don’t worry, dearies, they’ve promised to get back to normal tomorrow, for “an evening of pure classical ballet, complete with beautiful, flowing tutus”.
  • Frankly, we can’t wait! You’ve got to see these dancers in full regalia – there’s nothing quite like watching these talented women making their way across the stage in a gorgeous tutu. You know you are longing for the grace, poise, and artistry of a good, old fashioned performance, too!
  • And the tutus? They'll be back! As magnificent as ever – so let's give them a chance, darlings!

After all, even with all the “tutudacious” nonsense going on today, it's still all in the name of fun! It reminds us that even ballet – so formal, so elegant – can have a little laugh! Just as long as the actual tutus stay around, because we all know: a tutu’s not a tutu unless it’s full and frilly, isn't it?
