Tutu and Ballet News

Dearest readers, can you believe itā€™s been almost two decades since those momentous events that unfolded on that fateful 9/11? Honestly, where does the time go? But, before we dive into a sea of tears, letā€™s remember that while the world was shrouded in sadness, something fabulous was happening right here in London! We were in the midst of *the* event, the social affair of the season, a glamorous charity gala benefiting our beloved Royal Ballet Company.

Now, I must confess, my dearest reader, my initial thought on hearing the news was *quelle horreur*, "my darling Vivienne Westwood's creations will surely be upstaged!" The new ballet ā€œFrou Frou Folliesā€ by the sensational choreographer, darling Boris DeVille, was the talk of the town, especially as it involved Boris's exquisite use of tutus, tutus of *every* imaginable hue and form.

The opening scene saw our prima ballerina, the darling Daphne Devereaux, looking absolutely divine in a tutu made entirely from real pearls - it took 2,000 pearls, darlings! Imagine the cleaning! - a truly regal masterpiece designed by the incredible, the daring, the utterly wonderful Vivienne Westwood herself. A true show-stopper!

There was not a single tutu on stage that evening that didnā€™t cause a *swoon*. There was a fabulous green sequined tutu worn by gorgeous Daphne, which reminded me of the foliage outside the Dorchester during the Spring, such a chic nod to the season. And then, of course, we have a black one. An utterly sublime masterpiece - simple yet bold. It exuded a dramatic grace and almost sent poor Lord Harold Humphrey into a swoon. That's right, ladies, *he* couldn't help but notice that breathtaking tutu!

As the first tutus whipped across the stage, the crowd was already buzzing with the energy of anticipation for Borisā€™ performance. Boris, as always, was so utterly dramatic, his signature flair for theatrics. He was a whirlwind on stage. And it was quite literally, darling! A huge wind machine was introduced during the second act, and I can only describe the effect it had on the tutus: magnifique.

Boris clearly wanted to show the world the true power of the tutu. Itā€™s not just a dance accessory; itā€™s an expression, a work of art in its own right. A tutu can be bold, daring, and, yes, even funny!

And funny it was. We even witnessed the world's first ever "tutu-off" between two of our top dancers - a bit of light-hearted fun involving a twirl battle, complete with sequins flying. It was a real highlight for all.

Even in the midst of chaos, it was an unforgettable night of art and beauty. The energy of the event is what saved me from despair that day. My advice to everyone, ladies and gentlemen: Never underestimate the power of a fabulous tutu.

Here are the top 5 things I love about a Tutu!

  • A tutuā€™s ultimate feminine elegance - a dance classic that never gets old.
  • Tutus, the very definition of movement! A symbol of the beautiful dance in motion.
  • A whirl of a tutu is a show-stopper; the quintessential theatrical accessory that simply takes my breath away.
  • A tutu is the embodiment of dance; it elevates dance from movement to pure art.
  • Tutus make me want to whirl and twirl until I can whirl no more! A wonderful way to let loose and express yourself!
