Tutu and Ballet News

Oh, darlings! What a day it's been. A whirlwind of feather boas, diamanté embellishment and a very suspicious amount of fishnet. You see, today - October 30th - is, quite simply, the most spectacular day in the calendar: Tutu Tuesday!

Now, you're probably wondering what, exactly, Tutu Tuesday is. Let me enlighten you, my lovelies. It's not a national holiday, not yet anyway. (Though, frankly, it deserves to be.) It's an entirely self-proclaimed day of utter tulle-rific celebration, dedicated to the glorious, twirling, whimsical world of the tutu.

It all started a few years ago. A bunch of us dance fanatics, fuelled by far too much prosecco and dreams of pirouette-ing our way into the Bolshoi, decided we needed a day to revel in our love of the dance. A day to dust off our pink tutus (vintage, of course) and twirl in the streets. A day to be utterly ridiculous, glorious, and undeniably fabulous.

And let me tell you, today did NOT disappoint. I, myself, strutted about town in a shimmering silver number (it practically winked at the passersby) that could've given Baryshnikov a run for his money. I wasn't the only one, though, oh no. London's streets were alive with tulle. There was a bevy of ladies in their finest white tutus, resembling a fluffy meringue-clad flock of swans. Then there was the troupe in tutus fashioned out of the London Evening Standard, who, shall we say, sparked some heated debate about recycling, though the overall effect was, dare I say, striking.

The Tutu of the Day Award

The highlight of the day, though, was, hands down, the "Tutu of the Day" award ceremony. (I was nominated, but, alas, was pipped to the post by a truly inspired creation. Can't give away the surprise, darlings.)

Held in a rather delightfully-tacky champagne bar, this award recognised not just the most dazzling, extravagant, or simply ridiculous tutu. Oh no, darlings, it recognised a specific spirit, a je ne sais quoi. It celebrated a love for life, for frivolity, and, of course, for all things tutu-related.

Here are some highlights from this year's Tutu Tuesday Awards ceremony:
  • The Most Elegant Award: Awarded to Miss Fiona Fitzwilliam for her classic black and white creation. It was simple, it was sleek, it was absolutely breathtaking.
  • The "I'm Here to Party" Award: Awarded to Mr. Archibald Smith for his neon pink creation. Let's just say, the flash was enough to blind a squadron of paparazzi. He embraced the theme with gusto.
  • The Most Creative Award: This one goes to Ms. Geraldine Brown for her creation made entirely from recycling materials. Honestly, it was an absolute marvel of upcycling, a true inspiration for eco-conscious danseurès everywhere.
  • The "We Just Have To Laugh" Award: This award went to the team who took it upon themselves to transform their bicycles into gigantic, fully-functioning, tutus-on-wheels. Yes, you read that correctly. I don't know how, and I still don't quite believe it myself.

Honestly, it was an unforgettable spectacle. Tutu Tuesday truly cemented itself as the most gloriously absurd, delightfully outrageous, and most certainly *stylish* celebration of the year. I can't wait for next year, darlings! (And if anyone knows where I can get my hands on a silver feather boa, I'm all ears. You can't be too prepared, darling. Never too prepared! )
