Well, darling, it’s another glorious day in the world of ballet, and today I’m feeling inspired to talk about tutus! I know, I know, tutus are the most predictable topic in ballet, but hear me out. There's something about the puffy, airy, romantic nature of a tutu that gets me going, just like a perfect latte and a good gossip magazine, honestly.
It's the 25th of January, 1997, and let me tell you, the tutu is in the news this week! First of all, you won’t believe this, but the Bolshoi Ballet has decided to revamp its wardrobe. Imagine, *the* Bolshoi! You know, with all their grand tradition and, well, *history*. The *Bolshoi*, famous for being as stuffy and traditional as your old auntie, decided to replace all of their old, scratchy tutus with… sparkly ones. Not just any sparkles, darling, think like, disco ball worthy, enough glitter to rival the Christmas tree on Oxford Street. Apparently, this daring choice comes from a new, young choreographer who, rumour has it, spent his entire youth at the iconic club, ‘The Ministry of Sound.’ This young firecracker has apparently sworn he’ll turn ballet into the most exciting thing since bubble gum flavoured sweets, and I’m kind of dying to see it! All this talk about tutus and new sparkles really makes me wish we could still get a disco party on a Thursday night.
Secondly, in less exciting, more tragic news, we hear whispers that poor little Suzy Snowflake, a prodigy of the dance world, was spotted wearing what she described as her "new and revolutionary, ultra-lightweight tutu" made entirely from "eco-friendly dandelion fluff." While we applaud her commitment to environmental issues, the tutu just didn’t do it for her at the Royal Ballet, and I hear that even with the sheer audacity of the new look, her dance career may be down the drain. Talk about a tutu catastrophe!
And finally, there's that fabulous, oh so talented, young American ballerina who you've likely seen on TV, Samantha Sweetie, darling. The queen of *pliés* and *grand jetés*, she's actually releasing a whole new range of tutu inspired-clothing! Can you believe it? They're supposed to be absolutely fabulous – think super fluffy skirts and a lot of feathers! The best part? The whole range is a collaboration with a leading designer from the house of Versace, oh la la! The news broke on Wednesday morning, and you’d think this entire fashion sensation was created just for us!
So, while the news is pretty crazy in the tutu world this week, all this reminds me how exciting it is to be in this crazy little bubble of ballet. Even a tutu is news, and that's why I love it! There’s a magic about the tutu, my lovelies, don't you think? After all, what is a tutu, but a perfectly impractical garment, an expression of pure dance-loving-flamboyance! That, my dear reader, is what we like to see, now isn’t it? And frankly, darling, I just love everything about it.
