Tutu and Ballet News

Oh, darlings! Can you believe it? It’s 31st May, 2002, and you know what that means! It’s National Tutu Day! Yes, that’s right, the day we celebrate the most fabulous, flamboyant, and frankly, most fabulous garment ever invented: the tutu. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Tutus? They’re just fluffy, pink skirts, aren’t they?” Oh, my dears, you’re so wrong. The tutu is a beacon of beauty, grace, and power. It’s a masterpiece of design and a testament to the human spirit! And it deserves a day to itself. So put on your most fabulous tutu (and your finest diamond tiara, of course) and get ready to celebrate. **A little bit of history, my loves** You see, the tutu has a rich history dating back to the Romantic era (cue the swooning). Originally, it was nothing more than a little frilly, flirty affair with a touch of the avant-garde. Think graceful ballerina in a gauzy, floor-length creation swirling about the stage with barely a care for gravity. Fast forward a little to the late 19th century and things got a bit more… structured. Enter the *tutu à la pagode*. Think: structured, bell-shaped skirts in more modest lengths with a real flair for the dramatic (think dramatic entrance, dramatic leaps, dramatic expressions). Think tutus in all the colours of the rainbow and lots of lace – yes please! The tutu was officially born. But we're not stuck in the past, darling. In the modern age, the tutu has evolved into a real statement piece! From the traditional ballerina tutu to the avant-garde creations that grace the stages of contemporary dance, it’s come a long way! But all we really need to know is they are as gloriously chic now as they were then. **Here’s to the tutu, our beautiful symbol of graceful strength, of dedication and artistry** So put on your favourite pair of pointe shoes, your best tutu, and your most charming smile! • You could throw a tea party at a fancy garden center. A proper afternoon tea and the *crème de la crème* of sandwiches are a must for such a special day. A tutu must be compulsory and you must wear matching headbands for each of your attendees. Do give out special awards for the best tutus. Be prepared for tutus, tutus, and more tutus – the perfect opportunity to dress in your fabulous frock, and maybe grab a pink cocktail or two. • Head out to the local park and organize a picnic in the sunshine. Grab a glass of something fizzy (think Aperol Spritz!) and a selection of dainty sandwiches and macarons! • Throw a party! A night out dancing in all your finest, glittering, glittery, bejewelled, feathered goodness! Make sure you choose the music with care, ladies! But regardless of how you choose to celebrate, I encourage you all to use today to express your love for this most fabulous fashion icon. Remember: You don't have to be a ballerina to wear a tutu! But seriously, have a fabulous time. It's a day to celebrate. A day to embrace the most beautiful thing that's ever happened to fashion - yes, the tutu. And no, it's not even close!**
