Tutu and Ballet News

Oh darling, you won't believe the tutus that graced the stage at the Royal Opera House last night! It was like a whirlwind of tulle and feathers, and frankly, my dear, I was absolutely gobsmacked! The air was thick with the scent of Chanel No. 5 and anticipation, and the audience was positively buzzing with excitement. We were in for a treat, that's for sure!

The show itself, a daring and contemporary take on Swan Lake, was a sight to behold. Imagine, if you will, swans that are anything but graceful, gliding around the stage with all the elegance of a tipsy penguin! The choreography, by the avant-garde, ever-so-slightly controversial Mr. DeVille, was…well, shall we say, unconventional? He has, in my humble opinion, gone a bit too far in some instances. Let’s just say it was a good job the tutus were there to offset some of the more….errr, unusual choreography.

However, let's focus on what we're really here for, darling, the glorious, the stunning, the utterly divine TUTUS! From the moment those ballerinas took to the stage, their feathered headdresses practically touching the ceiling, the crowd erupted in a chorus of “ooh’s” and “ahh’s”. There were, of course, the classic, pristine white tutus, with their perfect tiers of tulle and flowing lengths. But then there were others – a daring explosion of colour! Magenta, turquoise, lime green… these tutus, my dears, they were not shy! One even sported a glorious pattern of pink flamingos in flight, which caused quite the stir! Some even seemed to be almost...functional? I did wonder at the practical application of a sequined tutu with pockets but then, let's be honest, fashion doesn't need to be practical to be spectacular, now does it?

Here’s my run-down on the highlights of the night’s tutus:

  • **The feathered tutu:** Imagine a ballerina, twirling on stage with feathers the size of her own head trailing behind her. It was breathtaking, like watching a delicate bird in flight. I could have stared at it for hours.
  • **The ‘I’m not here to play’ tutu:** This particular tutu was the epitome of ‘don’t mess with me’. Its deep burgundy colour and daring cut, slashed high on the thigh, hinted at the power and fierceness of the ballerina within.
  • **The 'I’m-going-to-the-disco-later’ tutu:** Glittering and shimmering, this sequin-covered number could have rivaled a disco ball. Its dazzling reflections bounced around the stage, adding an extra layer of magic to the show.
  • **The ‘a touch of rebellion’ tutu:** Made of what looked like repurposed burlap bags and featuring bold slogans, this tutu was a statement! "No more tutus" it proclaimed. Hmmm, I'm not sure that one would make it to next week's performance, darlings.

While the show certainly was entertaining and even inspiring, for me the true stars of the evening were the tutus. They stole the show and left us with an indelible image of pure grace, extravagance and daring beauty. You can tell I'm absolutely mesmerised, darling!

If you’re thinking of a little theatrical escape, be sure to snag a ticket to Swan Lake – the tutu extravaganza! You won’t be disappointed! Even if you can't attend the show, you know you’ll find yourself fantasising about all the feathers, tulle, and sequins!
