Tutu and Ballet News

Darling, it’s me again, your favourite dance columnist, here to spill the tea (or should I say, the pointe shoe?) on the latest goss from the world of ballet!

It's a Tuesday, my darlings, February 16th 1997, and it’s raining, absolutely chucking it down outside. And what better way to brighten a dreary day than with the magnificent world of tutus? Now, you may think, “Oh, sweetie, it's all a bit frilly and, like, ballet's so, *so* old school,” but trust me, darlings, the tutu is having a moment!

From a strictly practical point of view, the tutu, with its iconic tulle layers, acts as the perfect silhouette for showing off all those lovely leaps and twirls that us ballet aficionados go wild for! A tight fitting bodice and flowing, ethereal skirts...well, darling, it's the *dream* costume. But the tutu's role in the theatre, like a true diva, is far beyond mere practical functionality!

And, in other news, it seems the tutu isn't just for ballet any more! A number of designers, from McQueen to Moschino have created their own interpretations of this whimsical, feminine silhouette! So, I’m expecting to see tutus on the streets soon (and probably on some of my favourite Insta-influencers! ), though hopefully, unlike their stage counterparts, they'll have pockets (one girl’s gotta have pockets!).

However, not all the tutu-news is good! I just heard a rumour that a number of ballerinas are up in arms about tutus being redesigned for the modern age. Apparently, these, um, less traditional tutus just *don’t* move properly for their complex and daring moves! So, I say, if they don’t like the new tutus, they can simply rock their own signature styles!

And whilst I'm talking tutus, let's take a quick peek into the world of some of the more, um, *eccentric* tutu-lovers. Remember those tutu-wearing dancers who invaded the Queen's Birthday party? Well, those dancing divas are at it again, causing quite a stir outside the Savoy this week. A veritable parade of sequined, beaded, pink-tulle loveliness, dancing around a group of disgruntled journalists! I'm going to have to call the whole thing utterly *fab,* darling. So, next time you see those delightful, ballerina girls with their tutus on the street, just know, they're part of a vibrant, stylish, creative group who simply like to have fun.

Speaking of eccentricities, and speaking of the Savoy…

  • Rumours have been swirling that some *rather* well known theatre folks may have caused a bit of a scene last week! We’re all wondering why, and whether we'll see some juicy developments! The only thing we *can* confirm at the moment is the rather fabulous display of tutus they seemed to wear while parading around the building.

Well, my darlings, you have the latest tutu news! I hope this dose of tutu fun brightens your day! Now, I’ve got to go… there’s some hot new choreography waiting for me to try! See you in a couple of weeks.
