Tutu and Ballet News

Darling readers, you know I'm all about the fabulously feminine and, let's face it, there's nothing more wonderfully whimsical and totally delightful than a perfectly sculpted tutu. Oh, and it doesn't get more delightful than a day like today – October 29th 2002. Why, you ask? Well, darlings, it's the day the Royal Ballet announced a rather curious new production! Prepare to be totally transported by "Tutu Tuesdays: A Night of All-Tutu-Everything!" It’s quite the spectacle, even for our normally theatrical bunch.

Now, I know what you're thinking, "But darling, Tutus are traditionally reserved for Swan Lake and Giselle! " And you'd be absolutely right. It’s quite a change!

Apparently the Royal Ballet's resident fashion guru - yes, dear, even a prestigious ballet company has one - is obsessed with tutus, and what better way to get them out of the storeroom than in a brand new show! Honestly, she just adores a good swirl of tulle! Apparently she can’t go a day without reminiscing about all the legendary ballerinas of the past - all the beautiful, glittering tutus - and so this all-tutu spectacular has become her passion project. Oh, she's quite the romantic, isn't she?

So, what exactly is "Tutu Tuesdays: A Night of All-Tutu-Everything!" you ask? Well, it's everything tutu!

From the iconic Swan Lake, with the classical tulle tutu, to the more contemporary, and certainly very exciting, layered designs inspired by the likes of Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, to the more modern styles - even ones that have been cleverly disguised in materials like chiffon and even some sequins! Oh, how dazzling! The Royal Ballet’s dancers have taken tutu-dressing to a whole new level of excitement and have even been encouraged to do some fun interpretive dances - yes, that's right, darling, interpretive dance! With titles like "Tutu-itude" and "A Symphony of Swirls", it is, of course, just so brilliant!

Let me just tell you, darlings, the costumes alone are worth the price of the ticket! Apparently, some dancers have even opted to take it one step further with little accessories such as tiaras and fairy wings! Absolutely delightful!

Naturally, it's all a bit of a laugh, a bit of fun, and all the tutus were specially created by the company’s wonderful costume team using fabrics sourced all around the globe - everything from luxurious silk from Paris to handmade tulle from London! A right little extravaganza! I must admit though, some of the dancers are getting rather anxious about being upstaged by the elaborate outfits - oh dear. Don’t they know that when you have the opportunity to dress like a little fairy, darling, there’s no time to worry about your choreography?

Even better, darlings, this spectacle has taken on a life of its own, so to speak. Apparently, word got out to the media and suddenly every fashion magazine was wanting to cover the premiere. Why, darling, it's practically bigger than Paris Fashion Week. Everyone wants to know about "Tutu Tuesday" – It's a real buzz! Apparently, some high-end retailers are even going to stock a tutu-themed capsule collection for all those lovely customers who just adore ballet fashion, but cannot dance! Isn’t it simply wonderful that a whimsical piece of clothing like the tutu has become the center of attention? Just brilliant.

But as much as this show might make you feel like a whimsical princess, the most important aspect of "Tutu Tuesdays: A Night of All-Tutu-Everything" isn't just the stunning costumes or the exciting dance routines, but it’s the joy! The joy that’s evident in every pirouette, the twirls, and the elegant steps. And that, darlings, is a kind of magic that everyone deserves to experience.

So, for all you dance lovers, lovers of fun and whimsy, and even those with a penchant for fashion, I strongly suggest getting a ticket for "Tutu Tuesdays." Just don’t wear a tutu yourself - there’s enough tulle for the dancers, darlings. Remember, it’s just for the show!
