Tutu and Ballet News

It's Tutu-Much! Ballet World Goes Pink and White in a "Fit for a Queen" Frenzy!

August 21st, 1996: Hold onto your pointe shoes, darlings! The ballet world has been swept into a whirlwind of frothy, fabulous tutus, and let's just say, it's "fit for a queen." The craze is all thanks to a daring design decision by one of our favourite choreographers, Mr. Derek de la Mere, whose latest masterpiece, "The Queen's Swan" has the ballet world aflutter, quite literally!

You see, Mr. de la Mere, with the whimsical genius we've come to expect from him, has opted for a symphony of pastel perfection. Forget your typical charcoal leotards, the dancers of "The Queen's Swan" are twirling and leaping across the stage in a glorious ballet of pink and white.

And who can blame them? There's something inherently glamorous about a ballerina swirling in a frothy pink tutu, a vision of delicate grace and power. They look like a dream spun from sugar and champagne, don't you think?

It's like the whole ballet world is going through a "tutu-morphosis!" The news from the Royal Ballet School? The tutus are flying off the shelves, darling. From the tiniest prima ballerina in training to the veterans gracing the stages of London, they're all saying the same thing, "More pink, darling, more pink! "

We are hearing a lot of giggling from backstage – in fact, rumours are flying that the entire dance world is planning a "Pink Tutu Tea Party" to celebrate. Oh, and you know what's even better? The white tutus are proving to be a massive hit with the boys!

But of course, as with all fashion fads, the "pink and white" ballet craze isn't without its share of controversy. A few grumpy, grey-haired critics are wringing their hands, calling the tutus "frivolous" and "overly sentimental". Well, darling, what would they know about sentimentality? Their hearts clearly haven't been touched by the magical twirl of a ballerina in a perfectly fitted, cloud-like tutu.

Personally, I believe a ballerina needs a bit of "oomph," a bit of colour to express herself, to embody those dreams on stage. We’re just so delighted that this new trend is giving dancers an opportunity to add that bit of magic and flair to their artistry.

It’s definitely been the biggest news in ballet this month. The "The Queen's Swan" is a dazzling, shimmering showcase of ballet’s beauty, the perfect combination of art, strength and a little bit of unadulterated femininity. The tutus are the icing on the cake.

But don't let this craze lead you into the " tutu trap", darlings. Remember, a pink or white tutu alone can't make a ballerina. There’s still that magic of technique and precision, those hours of tireless practice, all those years of pushing through aches and pains, and the absolute artistry that each and every one of those magnificent dancers possesses.

The true magic, you see, comes from the dancers themselves, those beautiful creatures that bring grace and joy to the world. We have them to thank for these delicate, graceful tutus stealing our hearts. We just hope that the next step will be even bigger and brighter.

And speaking of steps, I just saw an adorable image on the internet. You can imagine it - it's a miniature chihuahua dressed in a pink tutu – an absolutely "divine" sight, don't you think? It’s the "cute" we all need in our lives.

For now, darling, we're all going to sit back and relish the "tutu-phoria" while it lasts, for a whimsical and utterly delightful journey this certainly is! Just try and catch me twirling a white tulle! We've all gone "tutu crazy!"

Things To Ponder Over a Pot of Darjeeling and A Scone:

  • Do pink and white tutus actually improve dance technique, or do we just like them more because we are used to watching ballerinas in boring old leotards?
  • What is the ideal colour for a tutu, if we could choose, just one colour, for the whole world of dance to adhere to. Should we stick with white or are we up for a different shade of tutus? A coral dream perhaps? The possibilities are endless!
  • Are ballerina buns going to go out of fashion? I mean if the rest of the world embraces this trend what will become of the ballerina bun? Maybe a side-sweep, with curls? Oh, just imagining all the possibilities - a world of bun-inspired hair styles.

Well, until our next sartorial ballet discussion, darlings!
