Tutu and Ballet News

Darling, can you believe it? It’s 27th November 1996, and the world is positively abuzz with the latest in ballet-related fashion! From the blush pink tulle of the Royal Ballet to the dazzling white swan lake creations, the tutu game is strong this season.
But let’s face it, my dears, we've all been there. Standing in the dressing room, trying to force our limbs into that unforgivingly tight leotard, praying we don't get caught in the dreaded “tutu wedgie,” and then…oh, the agony! We must remember this isn’t just about performance, it’s about survival. Because if we aren’t graceful, poised, and stunning, darling, who will look at us?

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of the traditional white tutu. But let’s face it, darlings, you need more than a crisp, pristine, and perfect white tutu to steal the spotlight. We must have colour, sparkle, drama, my loves! And in this world of sequins, sparkles and strategically placed feathers, I, for one, prefer the pink, my lovelies.

Why? Let’s discuss. Think about it. Ballet dancers wear those dazzling, white tutus all the time. They’re a mainstay, just as a fabulous new dress can become a favorite in your wardrobe. But a pink tutu, my lovelies, brings the ‘ooh-la-la,’ a bit of a "ooh" or "ahh", if you know what I mean. Let's say we want to take it up a notch, give the audience a visual surprise, you go with a fabulous pink tutu! Yes, darling, yes, yes. Think about it. You walk onto the stage, wearing a pink tulle creation - everyone notices the fabulous, fabulous color. Imagine it darling, in that lovely theatrical pink. It's fabulous.

Okay, let’s be honest. We have all watched those graceful ballerinas, wearing these tight-fitting leotards and tiny tutus – I’m talking those traditional, “look-at-my-muscles” leotards, you know what I’m saying? - while attempting to leap, dance, pirouette and twirl on stage for two hours! It’s enough to give any woman the vapors. So let’s celebrate their athleticism and glamour by recognizing the fabulous outfits!

Just for a moment, darlings, can we all appreciate the tiny, and the not so tiny ballerina!

Firstly, the size of those tutus? It's incredible how they manage to twirl and leap around the stage in those things! Do you know that it can be a real chore to wear those lovely and elegant ballet tutus? You want to create the most elegant moves, which require specific shapes and motions - which require your beautiful tutu to stay up, darlings! It is enough to drive a diva insane.

For my young dancers out there, let me tell you, wearing the fabulous tutu is almost a whole new skill, and a lot of the time you need your mummy or daddy or another dancer to help with those layers of tulle and all those gorgeous sequins.

Today, I have compiled some key points to help all the dancers and aspiring ballerinas out there get through their classes, and shows, my darlings.

  • Always check the weather forecast, ladies! There’s nothing worse than having to do your "arabesque" with your tulle flying in the breeze, creating an awkward shape - trust me on this, I have been there. Make sure you wear the correct attire, such as a chic little cardigan and tights.
  • Remember, those sequins are sticky, and those layers of tulle can cause all kinds of wardrobe mishaps on stage. It happens! So take it from someone who has seen everything. Be aware of how the tutu fits.
  • And let’s be honest - don’t wear your pink or white tutu out for brunch with your girlfriends! Or wear the sequin ones out at night. Leave those in your dressing room unless you are at a studio or the theatre, my dear!
  • You’ve worked so hard for that ballerina body, my lovelies. Make sure it shows! We need to see those legs, the perfect muscles! So show your beautiful and strong, lean legs, your graceful neck, the toned arms.

It's not always easy being a ballerina. In fact, some of us know that it’s pure hell to dance gracefully and expertly wearing all that glorious, dazzling fabric. And my darlings, just imagine how the dancers in the ballet company manage, how they make their movements graceful, powerful and delighted at the same time!

And just remember to be prepared - it’s a long journey, darling! Just because you have a dazzling pink tutu doesn’t make you a ballerina, my lovelies. It takes years and years to master all the incredible moves of ballet - yes, it’s demanding, it’s a challenging art. If you’re on that fabulous ballet journey - the “you must work for this" - make sure that you have all the fabulous fashion accessories and everything that’s gorgeous in your dance bag to get you through! I wish you well in your ballerina dreams, my dears!
