Tutu and Ballet News

Darling, it’s Friday the 19th of January 1997. The weekend is almost upon us and I know what we’re all thinking about - tutus. But not just any tutus! This week, darlings, we're talking about a very specific type of tutu. **Pink**. Oh yes, the blush-inducing, delicate, delightfully impractical tutu, beloved by prima ballerinas worldwide and, dare I say it, *me*.

It’s not an easy look to pull off. Imagine being the very picture of feminine grace, gliding across the stage, all floaty skirts and twinkling toes, in a garment that seems to be actively trying to snag itself on everything. Oh, but how exquisite the spectacle is, as if you're being swept up in a swirling vortex of pink silk. **Just picture it: the gasp as the curtain rises and there you are, my darlings, a vision of sugar and spice and all things nice, in that pink confection that is *the* ballerina tutu*. It’s *such* a *look*.

This is where it gets *truly* exciting: there are TWO SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT, my darlings! Now listen up: There are those who say white tutus are *so* last season (yes, some of my dear old friends still believe that - *they* just never quite grasp fashion, do they?! It’s as if they’ve never seen the majesty of a pink tutu!) And the other camp, *those in the know,* of course, will tell you there's nothing more exquisite than a true white, the colour of the innocent, virginal swan. It’s just so ethereal, my dears, so *clean*.

Frankly, it all boils down to personal preference! Some say white makes the dancers' bodies more visible, whereas the pink creates an added warmth and vibrancy to the stage. This leads me, dears, to my **top tips** when choosing a tutu of *any* colour (if you happen to be *looking* that is, which *I* *am* - a little bird told me I look quite fetching in white!):

  • It’s *all* about the fit. Make sure it doesn’t feel too loose - remember, you want to glide across that stage, and the right fit adds a lovely element of fluidity to your movement.
  • If it’s a stage performance, the lighting matters. Take this into consideration and ensure that the tutu will make your complexion shine in whatever stage lights are available.
  • Oh, and whatever you do, be sure your leotard matches the tutu beautifully - nothing says “amateur” like clashing colours. But don’t *just* rely on black - experiment with different tones of *white*, lilac and baby blue and you'll be making all those other *amateur* ballerinas *jealous*.

And remember, dear readers, this is ballet. A world of grace and elegance. You'll want to look stunning - the epitome of everything we want to be in the 90s! **Pink, my dears? **Pink or **white*? The choice is yours, but please, please, PLEASE embrace the delicate world of tulle and take the stage - *it’s time to let the twirling begin!**

*This week I've had the delightful opportunity to try on *both* a pink *and* a white tutu. Now, I wouldn’t say *either* is exactly my "look" but darling - who's going to argue with an iconic piece of feminine wardrobe history?! My conclusion? They both had a certain *je ne sais quoi*, each offering a distinct interpretation of grace and charm! You just can’t go wrong with either one of them, darling, in my opinion. A ballet dancer in a pink tutu will always have the “oh, I love her!" look. It's just so ... feminine, it just evokes that classic “sugar plum fairy” feel. Whereas the white, *oh dear, the white* … that’s more of the **dramatic "femme fatale," ready to seduce* look! The white gives that “swan lake” effect… almost *fierce*. *I'd certainly choose the white over the pink if I ever have the pleasure of doing “Swan Lake” at Covent Garden…*

Do you find yourself looking at pink tutus, darlings, wondering how many more lives are left on your black ballet slippers? Are you just ready for *a bit of color*, a change, a new approach? Let me tell you - pink is the way to go! It will turn those eyes to *your* performance on stage! And that *confidence*, the sense that you’re *owning* it, will make those tutus look *so* much *better*!

*I'm* on a mission, darlings, to get pink back *on top* again - maybe the 90's can reclaim that timeless style, a touch of nostalgic, *elegant* femininity to make heads turn wherever you walk! And it starts with *your* confidence and *your* own *sense* of style!
