The Pointe of No Return: Ballerinas, Tutus and Leotards – A Fashion Crisis?

Dearest darlings, gather ’round and let’s discuss a topic close to our collective heart: ballet! Yes, that graceful art form that requires us to literally wear our underwear on stage, or, if we’re lucky, a wonderfully sparkly leotard. I say sparkly because, well, honestly, a little bit of glitter never hurt anyone, especially when you’re balancing on your toes like a feathered bird.

Speaking of glitter, have you seen the state of our beloved tutus these days? Don’t get me wrong, there’s something absolutely enchanting about a ballerina in a flowing white or pink tutu. They truly embody ethereal beauty, especially if they can do a pirouette without wobbling (I’ve got a confession, I can’t. But hey, not everyone can be Pavlova!).

However, darling, the fashion industry is throwing shade on our tutus – literally! These days, we’re seeing an alarming trend towards black tutus! And not the chic, minimalist black tutu, I’m talking full-on Gothic vampire chic, like they're about to dance with Dracula at the Bolshoi! Darling, don’t get me wrong, there’s a time and a place for a good ol’ fashion gothic ballet (remember Swan Lake? We all loved the black swan!), but frankly, black tutus just aren’t cutting it anymore.

Here are some reasons why I find this whole black tutu trend, well, just wrong:

  • A Loss of Innocence: Black just feels a bit… heavy for ballet. Don’t we want a hint of magic, of pure fantasy, to uplift the audience? Pink and white represent all that, pure and ethereal like our own youthful dreams. A white tutu, swirling through the air, is practically begging for a confetti shower at the end! A black tutu just… sits there.
  • They Make Us Look Like Grim Reapers! Seriously, the black tutu screams 'Don’t look at me, I’m a walking death sentence.' But darling, we’re ballerinas! We’re about light, about soaring, about joyous leaps. The last thing we want is to look like we've stepped out of a macabre fairytale.
  • The Lack of Versatility! Now, I understand, sometimes the performance requires a certain somber mood. But let’s be honest, a black tutu is only truly flattering if the ballet is about mourning or a very dark topic. Now, a classic white tutu can go from lighthearted to dramatically sombre by simply using lighting. That’s what I call versatility!

Listen, my dears, I know, I know! Some might call this whole issue "a bit of a tut-tut." But don’t let anyone tell you that fashion is a silly subject. Our attire plays a crucial role in the art of dance! And honestly, how can you create a captivating image when you’re shrouded in darkness? We need that light, darling, we need to radiate!

So let’s get back to those traditional pink and white tutus! A delicate dusting of shimmer, maybe even a subtle bead or two, will have us soaring through the stage, like swans in flight – elegant, whimsical and full of joy. Because that's what we ballerinas are about. We are the ethereal dream. We are the embodiment of beauty in motion. And let's be honest, a ballerina in a flowing white tutu is simply a vision. We’re not grim reapers; we’re sugar plum fairies! Now get out there, put on a fabulous white or pink tutu and dance the night away, darling! And please, for the love of ballet, no more black tutus!
