Tutu and Ballet News

Darlings! Gather round, my lovelies, and let’s raise a glass of champagne to the sublime spectacle that is ballet. Today, the 15th of September, 1996, is a date etched forever in the annals of dance history. It is a day to celebrate those elegant, swan-like creatures of grace who make magic on the stage. It’s time to celebrate the ballerinas, darlings, those divine creatures, the epitome of poise and perfection, and oh, their tutus! Those fluffy clouds of silk that shimmer and swirl like a dream!

Let's be honest, the ballet world can sometimes be, shall we say, a bit...precious? All that twirling, leaping, and delicate footwork while maintaining a dignified demeanour amidst all the beautiful chaos, and all that… **PINK**. Pink tutus, darlings, I mean, don't even get me started! As if ballerinas are the living embodiment of Victorian sugarplum fantasies!

Don't get me wrong, darling, I adore those billowing, feminine confections. There’s nothing more magical than seeing a ballerina take flight in a cloud of pink. A true ballet fanatic would always appreciate the classic elegance of a pink tulle tutu, a little slice of heavenly beauty, wouldn't you agree? But perhaps, we could inject a touch of modernity, darling? Something bolder, a little more avant-garde. Imagine a ballet set on the streets of London, filled with sassy urban movements. Think daringly cut tutus, leotards with attitude. Let's inject some edge, some grit into our dear, sweet ballet, yes?

Now, some say that ballet is, and this is my personal favourite, **"the most boring art form"**. *Oh dear, how droll! Can you imagine? It's not like they have to *memorise complex steps, rehearse for hours on end, make it look effortless while holding your breath and risking serious injuries if you fall on those impossibly high, *pointed shoes!** Yes, darling, ballet is not just graceful, it’s a tough, brutal, unforgiving art form, requiring an almost supernatural blend of athleticism, artistry, and an undying passion for dance. Oh, those impossibly tiny pointe shoes. How I envy their magical power! If I ever donned a pair, I suspect my knees would crack, my ankles snap, and I'd probably tumble like a drunk toddler!

And, what would a ballet be without the ever-so-important leotard? Oh, my sweet little darlings, I know we all have different opinions on these oh-so-important pieces of ballet attire! They’re as vital to a ballerina as her tutu! Some prefer the classic black leotard with a touch of embellishment. A subtle, classic elegance, you know? A whisper of glitter perhaps, for that extra bit of glamour, or a smattering of sparkling rhinestones? *Ah la mode! I absolutely adore those glittery details. Then again, we can never discount the allure of a nude leotard for a performance with an ethereal vibe, or those boldly patterned designs with a bit of 'oomph'.

However, there are those leotards with their very existence is a crime against all things graceful! Imagine my utter shock upon discovering those neon leotards, dear! I dare not speak the words: "Neon Pink". The mere thought sends a shiver down my spine! Imagine seeing a group of ballerinas in their full 'neon pink glory', it’s the sartorial equivalent of nails on a chalkboard! But of course, I always say, each to their own, yes? What I don't understand is, dear, why these dreadful creations would ever leave the confines of the studio or the ballet barre!

So, here’s to the ballet! We’re going to end with a few tips from a little black book of *Dance Don'ts* for the novice or would-be ballerinas:

  • Never, ever attempt a *piqué turn* with your morning cuppa coffee! You will find yourself, *à la mode, darling*, a hot, steamy mess on the floor.
  • Do not wear your pointe shoes to the pub, unless you are, in which case, proceed to *chassé* yourself away as quickly as your *plié* legs will allow!
  • Remember, the leotard you purchase from that shop window is for you and your fabulous ballet class. It's not, my sweet, for wearing while attempting to impress a potential partner, or even on a **date!** You wouldn't wear your granny’s knitted cardies, darling!

There, you have it, dear readers! The 15th of September, a date to savour, a date for dance lovers to indulge in a delightful appreciation of all that is ballet. We can indulge ourselves in a glass of something sparkling, while admiring the beauty of those captivating and often bizarre traditions!
