Tutu and Ballet News

Darling, you won’t believe the drama that unfolded at the Royal Ballet’s *Swan Lake* last night! Oh my, it was positively *Swan Lake*tastic! I’m still wiping away the tears, but not of sorrow, darlings. It was an absolute spectacle of hilarious proportions! Honestly, one couldn't even make this up.

The night started off in the usual exquisite manner – beautiful music, perfectly sculpted dancers, and those sublime white tutus, each a fluffy confection that could melt the heart of the most cynical soul. Well, apart from the stagehand, bless his soul. He, quite unfortunately, got tangled in the rather magnificent white train of Dame Evelyn's *Black Swan* costume! That, my darlings, was the catalyst to an evening of truly remarkable amusement!

Dame Evelyn, never one to let a little wardrobe malfunction deter her, *immediately* threw herself into the dance, trailing the stagehand, his rather unfashionable yellow cleaning trousers trailing after her. You see, dear reader, the stagehand was a staunch admirer of Dame Evelyn's dancing, hence his decision to hold onto her skirt during the whole performance! Honestly, it was almost *too* camp, and I almost choked on my champagne with laughter. You'd think this, dear, would be the absolute pinnacle of the evening. Not so!

For dear Lady Penelope, famous for her stunning leaps and that fabulous white tutu (that quite honestly makes my legs feel like sausages by comparison), well, she forgot her ballet shoes backstage, darling! I swear to you, dear readers, I've seen it all in the world of dance but a ballerina waltzing on pointe in her fluffy white bedroom slippers was something that even my well-honed, ballet-obsessed mind wasn't prepared for. I think I saw even the most austere critics on the front row doing a sort of muted 'giggle-shimmy.' This was an incident worthy of the paparazzi, darlings!

You'd think, at this point, my darling readers, that this was all, but no. Our darling ensemble, bless them, thought it would be a stroke of pure brilliance to 'enhance' their dancing with the assistance of the *Royal Ballet Chorus's* rather grand supply of feather boas. Apparently, these boas were deemed "essential for expressing the inner-psyche of the swans." Darling, the entire ballet floor looked like an overblown feathered nightmare – it was almost as though they were reenacting a forgotten episode of *Strictly Come Dancing* after a rather lively party. And yet, oddly, despite all of this absurdity, it worked! You could practically feel the collective sigh of relief as the audience laughed their heads off at this performance. It was as if we were all collectively remembering the magic that ballet offers. Sometimes the best entertainment lies in embracing the unexpected!

Honestly, I think I've had enough excitement for one week. As the performance drew to a close, I swear the curtain came down as if the entire theatre were gasping for breath – and so, my darlings, with one last giggle and a whispered, 'encore!' we all stepped out onto the cobbled street. One thing is for certain, darling, last night, *Swan Lake* wasn’t about the dancing, no. It wasn't about the choreography or even the costume design. It was a love letter to the wonderful weirdness, the sheer audacity, and above all, the sheer fun of being a part of the world of ballet. As a reminder, if you're feeling stressed out or simply want a dose of unexpected fun, pop to a ballet performance - you never know what delightfully awkward and absolutely perfect shenanigans will greet you!
