Tutu and Ballet News

**A tutu-much fuss about nothing?**

My darlings, can you believe it’s 29 August 1996? Time absolutely flies when you're pirouette-ing through life, don’t you think? It's been a whirlwind of a week, a kaleidoscope of rehearsals, arabesques, and a bit of a *pas de deux* with the stage manager over, well, let's just say the *je ne sais quoi* of the lighting was a bit off. But, as we say in the ballet world, "the show must go on," even if my favourite pink tutu got a suspicious stain during the last rehearsal (we suspect it was the stagehand with the dubious éclair habit...).

However, amongst all this drama (and don’t even get me started on the diva-esque antics of the principal dancer who insisted the music be sped up because she wanted to showcase her "super fast fouetté"), a piece of news broke this morning that sent shivers down the spines of all ballet aficionados. Yes, my loves, the great debate of all time is finally settled: are white tutus better than pink?

Prepare to have your preconceived notions challenged, darlings, because this latest research from the Royal Academy of Dance – yes, *that* Royal Academy of Dance – has left even seasoned ballerinas flabbergasted.

It seems that all this time, we’ve been focusing on the *wrong* factor. It’s not about the color itself, it's the **light.** Turns out white tutus under specific stage lighting accentuate the dancer's movement in ways never before imagined, creating an almost ethereal, celestial quality, as if they're gliding through a starlit sky. And let's face it, who wouldn’t want to feel like a star under those stage lights, right?

However, the real shock comes with the pink tutus. Under the right light, those beauties, the vibrant, luscious, hot-pink tutus, accentuate a completely different aspect of the dancer's artistry: **passion**.

**A Ballet-Style Showdown: Pink or White?**

**Why, yes, a little colour does help!** I'm no scientist (though I did major in dance history, so close enough, right?), but apparently, the shades of pink we're accustomed to seeing are essentially what our eyes see when light bounces off a white surface under certain conditions. Think about that. You are looking at light that bounces off of a surface which is being reflected back to you, causing you to see shades of pink! And the results speak for themselves. Pink has the potential to be the new queen of the stage!

Now, we can all agree that, no matter what color, a tutu is a symbol of beauty and elegance, but there are so many arguments going on already amongst our community:

  • "Pink is too girly!"
  • "White is classic!**
  • **"But what about the different hues of pink, you know, the light pink, the rose-gold, the salmon... there are SO MANY choices!" **
  • **"And what about our beautiful *pointe shoes*? Are they better in white or pink? Oh dear, the possibilities!**"

The most heated argument amongst my friends is about **whether pink makes a dancer appear younger or whether white adds more professionalism.** It seems there's not a right answer in this matter. It's up to individual tastes, which is frankly a shame, because wouldn't it be nice if everyone could simply agree and just enjoy the ballet without the incessant "pink or white" debates?!

The news certainly hasn’t settled the "pink vs. white" debate, and this isn’t about winning, but perhaps about appreciating the sheer diversity in our beautiful art form. So next time you find yourself at the ballet, forget all the hype, put down the judgment, and enjoy the artistry on stage, whether it's wrapped in a fluffy pink tutu, a classic white tutu, or an exquisitely-designed leotard! And perhaps even grab an éclair after the show to indulge your inner diva. It wouldn’t be proper ballet without it, after all!

Keep your pointe shoes high and your smiles bright, my darlings!
