Tutu and Ballet News

Ballet's Big Tutus!
Oh darling, it's September the 1st, 1996, and we're absolutely buzzing about the news in the ballet world, and let's just say it's... tutus-ally fabulous! It seems like the classic white tutu, the quintessential symbol of elegance and grace, has suddenly taken a back seat to its flamboyant and far more fabulous pink cousin. We're not talking a pale, baby pink, dear, but a vibrant, almost shocking fuchsia, a colour that practically screams "look at me!" - and trust me, everyone is! But before we delve into this bold fashion statement, let's be honest, the ballet world is hardly known for its edgy style, or is it? They are about as predictable as the changing seasons and, to be honest, we quite like it that way. What would we do without our yearly dose of swan lake and the endless retelling of the sleeping beauty, they’re simply classic. So, this unexpected burst of colour in the traditionally all-white tutu realm is definitely raising some eyebrows - and even causing some tutus-clad feathers to be ruffled! Pink Power!
Our sources, who, I can tell you now, are impeccable (if they were just a touch more gossipy, they’d be simply divine!) have spilled the tea (well, actually a rather lovely Earl Grey). It appears this pink power play all started at the esteemed, oh-so-fashionable Royal Ballet. We hear whispers of a young ballerina with an exceptionally vibrant, daring personality. It is said she declared to her instructors, 'I shall only dance in pink!' They looked at her with such surprise. But little did they know, that her declaration would be the catalyst to change, the big bang that ignited a cultural shift in ballet! They gave in. That was a very brave move by the directors and this girl’s conviction, it shows an appreciation for bold and unexpected statements of fashion. I just wish she would give me an interview to hear all about it. Apparently, her fearless choice not only stole the show in the opening scene of Swan Lake, it literally inspired an entire chorus line of her fellow ballerinas! Oh darling, this is fashion and ballet history in the making, pure and simple. Pink just seems so bold and so refreshing! And trust me, when the entire ballet world jumps on the bandwagon, as it’s starting to now, pink really can be the new white! Tutu Talk! Oh the tutus! Darling, they've become the talk of the town! And we are not talking the gossip, the whispers that circulate on the streets and at ballet classes but, this news, this has found its way to the news columns, the front pages of the Daily Mail and the gossip in The Times! Well, pink may not necessarily have arrived at the Met yet (though whispers are reaching the right ears - you can practically see those posh old women adjusting their diamond necklaces!). But it has most certainly ignited a fiery pink storm in the ballet world. It’s absolutely thrilling for the audience to witness, we’re in awe as ballerinas leap, twirl and pirouette with pink tutus billowing behind them. This is more than a style statement - this is a statement on creativity. Some say it's just a phase, but my instincts are telling me pink is here to stay - or, at least until something even more shocking (and fashionable!) comes along! That's the magic of fashion darling - the unexpected Tutu Chic
This isn’t all just fashion, we need to go back to the source! What does the colour pink really mean in ballet? Well, pink has always had a fascinating association with femininity. I would say the pink tutu represents, for the audience, an element of both power and playfulness. It’s fun. Pink in ballet allows the dancer to fully embrace femininity without appearing sweet or fragile. On a very practical level the dancers do say, it can have an affect on the lighting. White, darling, often disappears in those stage lights. It is almost ethereal and hard to find the figure within. This pink? It comes alive on stage. This vibrancy adds such dynamism! And let’s not forget about the leotards, those second skin numbers. I don't need to tell you, darling, those can be very uncomfortable! Pink definitely hides a multitude of sins! And really is there a more stunning combination in the world of ballet than a vibrant pink leotard under a pink tutu! Just perfect! The ballet world is certainly shaking up the world of dance and style. We might be seeing more than just pink tutus on the dance floor in the future. Imagine, an entire show where every ballerina dances in her own individual style, maybe a purple tutu here, an emerald green over there? And that, darling, is what makes this trend so deliciously exciting. Let’s be honest, anything that breathes a touch of life, a spark of personality, a whole lot of confidence into the world of ballet, well that’s simply brilliant. So there you have it. We’re entering a whole new world of vibrant and unexpected style and for me this is all so brilliant. And as for this ballet fashionista - watch out world, you’re not just gonna see pink, you are going to be completely blown away!
