Tutu and Ballet News

It’s all about the Tutu, darlings!

11th December 1996 - Can you believe it's been almost 30 years since I was a tiny ballerina, bouncing around in a tutu, dreaming of performing at the Royal Opera House? My, how times have changed. But let's face it, one thing's stayed the same: the absolute, unwavering magic of the tutu! It's the epitome of femininity, a symbol of grace and artistry, and a whole lot of fun.

Now, I know what you're thinking. You're picturing those fluffy pink tutus, right? The ones we all used to wear in ballet classes as children. The ones that made us feel like we were literally twirling amongst the clouds. Ah, childhood! While pink will always have a special place in my heart (and frankly, in every ballet dancer's wardrobe!), let's acknowledge that the tutu world is much more sophisticated than just that saccharine shade. White? Gorgeous. Black? Effortlessly chic. And the bolder colours? Let's just say, the drama's never been better.

Here's the thing: it's not just the colour that counts, it's the whole package. A beautifully constructed tutu, especially a classic romantic tutu, is an art form in itself. Those layers of tulle, carefully crafted into a swirling masterpiece - they are the stuff dreams are made of. Just picture that breathtaking moment when a dancer leaps across the stage, the tutu cascading around her like a cloud of shimmering perfection. The perfect ballerina, twirling in a perfect tutu... the world stops, and all is right with the universe.

Speaking of ballerinas, have you noticed how those cheeky little tutus have a habit of causing all sorts of fun (and maybe slightly embarrassing) situations? Imagine this: you're mid-pirouette, and your tutu, feeling a tad bit too frisky, decides to take a little trip of its own. Suddenly, the graceful ballerina is transformed into a whirling, twirling dervish of tulle. Hilarious? Absolutely. But, we can't deny that there's a certain element of, let's just say "wardrobe malfunction", to it all.

There's also the leotard, of course. Oh, the leotard. This is another garment that evokes childhood memories, though I must admit, I don't recall it quite as fondly. Let's just say those leotard "feelings" were a mixed bag. It was all about finding that sweet spot, balancing practicality and performance, because honestly, leotards could get a bit "overzealous" on the dance floor, shall we say. From the itchy material to the slightly too tight feel, a good leotard can make or break a dancer. They deserve their own day in the spotlight! I mean, think about the amount of movement and flexibility they allow - all while looking fabulous. And don't forget, they often come with the most amazing prints and colours. A black leotard? Timeless, chic, and perfect for showcasing every single beautiful line of a dancer's body. A rainbow leotard? Now, that's a showstopper!

Speaking of shows, have you ever watched a professional ballet performance and just gasped at the beauty of the tutus? Those ballerinas are like real-life super-women, performing their artistry while defying gravity, in delicate tutus that look like they would fall apart at any moment. But, don't be fooled by their seemingly flimsy nature. Those tutus are incredibly strong. In fact, some can withstand even the most ferocious grand jetés! A testament to the power and resilience of not only the dancers but also of the garments that allow them to perform such breathtaking feats.

Let’s give it up for the tutu! This is an item that never goes out of style. Whether it’s the classic pink, a sophisticated white, a bold black or even something more vibrant – it's a symbol of elegance, a representation of artistry, and let’s be honest, it's a ton of fun! So, next time you watch a ballet, just take a moment to appreciate the incredible work that goes into crafting those majestic tutus, and remember: it's all about the tutu, darlings!

But that's not all...

It’s a whole world of style, isn't it? In our quest to understand the ultimate tutu, here are some tidbits, for your dance-loving enjoyment:

  • The humble tutu dates back to the late 19th century, and it was created, like so many great things, out of a desperate need for something more. Imagine: The bulky, cumbersome dance costumes of the past? It’s no wonder we embraced the revolution of the tutu!
  • A typical tutu for a romantic ballet (and this is my favorite) is usually crafted with a "pannier", an inner framework made of a soft yet structured fabric to create that magical shape, that elegant dome that sits right below the waistline. This pannier? Absolute genius! And a little bit magical, right?
  • Not to mention the vast number of materials used to craft a tutu: layers and layers of tulle, satin, organza - It's a serious labor of love, ladies. I would hate to even imagine the number of yards of tulle used to make the glorious tutus for just one ballet!
  • Tutus also come with a surprising number of “looks”, depending on their design: “Romantic”, “Classic”, “Platter” … I can’t get over how fun and glamorous these styles are. “Platter”? I just had to include that! How could I not?
  • We also have the iconic “Crinoline” which basically has the “big and poofy” down to a T, (like a gigantic flower waiting to burst into bloom), and finally, the “Bell” tutu – which makes me think of a ballerina who is about to take flight! I bet we have all done a little dance twirl to make ourselves feel like we are wearing a beautiful bell-shaped tutu.

So, whether you're a seasoned ballet enthusiast or a newbie taking your first steps in the world of tutus, let's take a moment to acknowledge these beautiful garments for their role in dance and the magic they add to any ballet performance. I’ll be celebrating them for a lifetime!

Happy twirling, my dears!
