Tutu and Ballet News

Dearest darlings,

Get your tutus ready and your leg warmers at the ready because today, February 15th 2005, is the day we celebrate the glorious and utterly ridiculous world of ballet! It’s time to prance and twirl, ladies (and gents, if you're brave enough to join us!).

Let’s be honest, the world of ballet is a bit bonkers, isn't it? The costumes! The dramatic music! The utter concentration required to balance on your toes for what feels like an eternity (but is actually about five seconds, I promise). And let's not even talk about those rigid, unforgiving ballet shoes, which could only be created by someone who had never actually attempted a plié in their life!

But then there are the sheer joys, the magic, the utter artistry that make you forget you're watching someone do some highly coordinated jumping around. The way a ballerina, a creature of pure grace and ethereal beauty, floats across the stage. The way she turns on the spot, with her head tilted in an exquisite pose. It's all quite spectacular really, and absolutely deserving of celebration.

In the spirit of joyous celebration, I've compiled a little list of reasons why we all should just say yes to ballet. Why, you ask? Because, frankly, darlings, life is too short to be a grump.

• The Tutu: There's simply no more iconic piece of clothing in the world. The pouffy, dreamy tutu, whether in a blush of pink or a dazzling white, is a symbol of femininity and elegance that makes even the most sensible woman feel like a fairy princess (until she tries to climb a staircase wearing one).
• The Leotard: It’s basically the single most versatile item of clothing you can own. Dress it up with a pair of heels for a night out on the town, wear it under a skirt or trousers for daytime fun, and throw on a tutu for a special occasion. Leotards, darlings, are the ultimate sartorial chameleon! • The Ballerinas: From their perfectly groomed ponytails to their impeccable posture, they ooze grace and elegance. And those little buns! Have you seen their buns, the tiny perfect sculpted buns?! I just have to give them points for bun dedication.

It's also the day to honour the art of ballet, from the grueling years of training (apparently, eating enough calories is considered training in this sport!) to the delicate footwork that has you wondering how they even manage to stand up, let alone leap, twirl, and kick with such precise and beautiful movement.

It’s not all glitter and pirouettes, of course. There’s also the endless hours of practice, the strict discipline, the sheer determination it takes to master the craft. This requires a whole lot of dedication that, at times, borders on ridiculousness, even I’m going to admit.

So whether you're a seasoned ballet buff or a newbie taking your first tentative steps into the world of pliés and pas de bourrées, today is your day to revel in the silliness, celebrate the talent, and give a hearty cheer to the women and men who bring magic to life with their passion for this incredible, absurd, but ultimately joyous, art form.

Now, excuse me while I practice my fouetté in the kitchen. It's not a real fouetté, obviously, I haven't got the physical capabilities to even contemplate a fouetté on a day to day basis but if I stand by the countertop and spin and yell ‘Fouetté!' with sufficient theatrical panache, the dog always finds it quite impressive.

And, darling, I have to please to try to impress the dog, wouldn’t you agree?

Happy National Ballet Day, everyone!

With much love and a generous sprinkle of glitter,
Yours in all things twirling,
