Tutu and Ballet News

Ballet: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a Tutu-tastic Tempest!

Oh darling, it’s been a long time coming. In fact, the last time I saw such a storm in a teacup was at the last Royal Ballet Gala. Well, the excitement swirling around the world of dance right now is enough to make even the most stoic of swans crack a smile. (Think, Darcey Bussell, on pointe!)

It all started with a little pink. No, I don’t mean that blush of embarrassment on your face after you trip on your pointe shoes for the millionth time (don't lie, we've all been there!) but a bona fide, ruffled pink explosion in the world of ballet.

What’s the story, you ask? Well, buckle up, darling. It’s a wild ride, as exciting as watching Margot Fonteyn pirouette a double-tour.

It seems our beloved ballet companies, those fortresses of classical grandeur, are, for the first time in centuries (maybe ever, who can really remember all that history in our headspinning world), dipping their toes, nay, leaping headfirst into a pool of color. No more beige! And by beige, darling, I mean those tired old white tutus that have graced our stages for a millennium. A yawn of tradition! Now, hold onto your bar, because here comes the pink! Yes, darling, the ballet world is literally blushing!

Pink: The Colour That’s Breaking Ballet!

It's all about the tulle, isn't it? I mean, really, where would ballet be without the airy lightness and ethereal grace of a perfectly flounced tutu? For centuries, the go-to was, of course, the white tutu – pristine, unblemished, and just a tad bit… well, predictable. Think swan, think ethereal beauty, think… sigh… same old same old. But dear reader, now the clouds are parted, and the sun is shining in glorious technicolor pink!

You heard it here first, darling: The tutu has had a makeover. This year, for spring (and for years to come, if I may dare to dream!), our favourite ballet companies are putting their white tutus on a strict diet of pale pink, blush rose, and even some daring raspberry shades! Yes, we're witnessing a tutu revolution, one vibrant swish and twirl at a time. And it's oh-so-refreshing.

The revolution, it seems, began with the darling (but, darling, so bold) Russian Bolshoi Ballet. Now, one thing the Bolshoi does, they do with a grand sweep. So, their recent premiere of Swan Lake, featuring the leading ballerina decked out in a breathtaking, shockingly pink tutu, well, it practically brought the house down. The media, darling, the media was in a frenzy. You can't buy this kind of publicity!

The audacity! It was almost, dare I say, rebellious. A bold statement, perhaps, about the future of ballet - one that whispers: ‘Let us embrace the unexpected. Let us bring in some colour. Let us laugh. Let us twirl!’

Don't just stand there! What to do in a pink tutu-tastic world

I don't know about you darling, but I’m rather thrilled about the revolution! We’re living in such a gray and serious world, that this new colour scheme in the world of ballet has me completely enamoured. In fact, it’s already started a revolution. Now, not to be dramatic, but in the end, it’s all about the power of color. Isn't it? Just look at what it has done for our emotions and even our sense of style. It’s time to give up your gray sweaters, my darling, and welcome in some bright pink hues, or why not just throw yourself headfirst into the ballet-inspired blush world with an adorable ballet pink handbag. It's not for the faint of heart! This revolution is about daring to be different, daring to embrace the unconventional, daring to twirl with abandon and... a hint of rose.

Ballet: The Colourful Revolution! A Pink Tutu Is Only the Beginning!

Darling, don’t tell me you've been living under a rock. Everyone’s been talking about the new Ballet. And, believe me, there’s more to it than pink. But as we’re talking fashion, and let’s be honest, the first thing we see are those gorgeous tutus, that's what caught the eye. What comes next? Is this merely a trend, a fad, or a genuine evolution of ballet itself? No one has all the answers just yet.

It all adds up, darling! You know how we feel about this - change can be daunting. But what if, and this is a big IF, what if it's a glorious explosion of change, one that celebrates movement, art, beauty, and… pink! So put your hand on your heart, look around you, darling. Embrace the new colours, let them dance on the stage and in your soul! You know I'm right - let’s raise a glass to the revolution, and here’s to even more bright hues and playful moves in the beautiful world of ballet. Now, let’s take five for a cup of tea!

Some things you might not know,

  • Did you know that the tutu was not always the classic ballerina’s outfit? Initially, dancers performed in floor-length skirts. It wasn't until the Romantic period (think the 1800s), that Marie Taglioni, the legendary ballerina, donned a shortened skirt that allowed her to display her intricate movements and that, my darlings, started the iconic tutu story.
  • The original "pink tutu" had a historical influence? It was the Romantic period again when ballerinas started embracing softer pastel hues, especially a lovely blush-like pink. It was an entirely different palette for the time. Imagine a revolutionary pink explosion! The original color scheme and the soft color were influenced by the desire to convey a more ethereal and innocent look, reflecting the romantic spirit of the age. Isn’t it all so dreamy!
  • Pink is still a major color choice today? Don’t worry, those lovely white tutus are still a key part of ballet attire. There are several types of tutus, from the romantic "bell" shape to the more classical "pagode" tutu, each one designed for a specific ballet style. And, pink and white make for a lovely mix-and-match combination. This gives a ballet’s creative vision room to move and experiment.
  • But don’t think the changes in the ballet world stop at color! Think costumes. And then, the dance choreography. It's not all about the look, it’s the way the dance itself will embrace new and modern sensibilities. This is something exciting we’ll need to watch unfold.

So let the color revolution begin! I predict this isn’t the last time we’ll be writing about new and wonderful ballet colors!
