Tutu and Ballet News

06 May 2005: Tututastic Tuesday - Ballet Goes Bonkers!

My darlings, prepare to pirouette yourselves into a frenzy, because today is a day for celebration. It’s Tututastic Tuesday, a day to honour the iconic symbol of ballet: the tutu! We're talking clouds of tulle, swirling circles of exquisite fabric, and a whole lot of pink (or, for the bold amongst us, pristine white).

Let’s face it, tutus are the epitome of grace and elegance, they make even the most awkward of us feel like graceful swans. And today, we’re giving them their due respect! But how, you ask? Oh, darling, the possibilities are as endless as the twirling fabric itself!

Here’s a little bit of inspiration to get you started:

  • Go Full Tutu: Let's ditch the sensible slacks and the dreary trousers for the day. Put on that tutu you’ve been secretly dreaming of! Wear it to the supermarket, wear it to the office, wear it to that lunch with your Mum! If you don't own a tutu, I suggest you remedy this immediately! There's a tutu out there with your name on it, just waiting to bring a little sparkle to your life.
  • Tutu Tuesday Dress Code: For your Tututastic Tuesday get-together, tell everyone to come dressed in their best ballet-inspired outfits. Think leotards (with or without tutus!), tights in every colour imaginable, and plenty of sparkles. Bonus points for the most creative interpretation of ballet fashion, and a double whammy if they have a ballerina bun on their head.
  • Tutu Baking Extravaganza: Bake a batch of tutu-shaped cupcakes or, for the more ambitious among us, go for a tutu-inspired cake! Get your baking on and create some treats that would make a ballerina weep with joy (and eat with gusto).
  • Dance Like Nobody's Watching: Don't worry if your pirouettes are a bit wonky, it's Tututastic Tuesday, so throw your arms up in the air, jump around and spin around, it’s the perfect time for unleashing your inner prima ballerina!

Don’t forget to snap pictures and share your Tututastic Tuesday adventures! It's all about celebrating the wonderful world of dance and the captivating charms of the tutu. Remember, the day is dedicated to twirling, frolicking, and having a little fun – and if it makes you feel like a ballerina for the day, then even better. So get ready to step, turn, and leap into Tututastic Tuesday!

The Tale of the Tutus: A Fashion Flashback

Tutus have had a rather fascinating journey to the fashionista's heart. They are more than just frilly fabric; they are an explosion of beauty and elegance, an ode to movement and grace.

While their association with ballet goes back to the 19th century, the concept itself, dear readers, is far older! Believe it or not, a forerunner of the tutu can be found in ancient Greece. They used to wrap delicate strips of fabric around their waists and then draped it downwards in a way that resembled a mini-tutu - talk about fashion foreshadowing! Then came the "tutu," not to be confused with the ballerina tutu. A 16th-century Italian dress! Imagine the Renaissance era with the elegant long flowing fabric... *snap snap* It makes a tutu's historical presence pretty much undeniable, right?

The tutu, as we know it, though, emerged from the romantic period of ballet, with Marie Taglioni - *oh the name trips so gracefully off the tongue!* - a star ballerina, pioneering the 'tutu romanesque', short and layered, which allowed for the romantic, airy movements. That iconic image of the ballerina en pointe, a cloud of delicate tulle around her - *a true moment of fashion history*.

Today, tutus continue to capture hearts, from the stage to fashion runways. They’ve appeared everywhere from red carpets to casual streetwear – a constant symbol of artistry and, well, dare we say, frivolity!

And as we move forward, you just know those adorable swaths of tulle will continue to take our breath away! After all, it's a sartorial symbol of art, dance, and unabashed whimsy - all rolled up into one magnificent, fluffy package. And who doesn't adore a good bit of whimsy?!
