Tutu and Ballet News

"The Great Tutu Revolution: Ballerinas Say 'No' to Pink!"

Darling, it's official: the world of ballet is on fire, and not in a good, stage-lighting sort of way. I'm talking a full-on, hair-on-fire, sequins-flying frenzy because the traditional pink tutu is no more, or at least, it's being challenged in a most delightful way! And you know what, this little fashion revolt is absolutely making my day. 💃

Remember those childhood dreams, all those glossy ballet books with dancers leaping around in, well, pink? And it’s a lovely colour – no question! Pink has its place. But we live in an age of colour, baby! So buckle up and prepare to be amazed, because, well, I certainly am!

What started as a whisper in the wings of the Royal Ballet has become a full-blown balletic tempest in a tutu teacup. It began, apparently, with a cheeky little blue tutu. It was, according to whispers in the backstage coffee shop (or, I should say, “café”), designed by a young, up-and-coming designer with a penchant for pushing boundaries. But it's more than just a shade of blue, my dears, it's a bold statement about artistic freedom! 💥

The blue tutu landed on stage last month, worn by a young, fiery redhead (the most beautiful redhead I’ve seen since Moira Shearer!), and suddenly, everyone's paying attention to their tutus. I mean, who would have thought? What started as a whisper about a bit of colour on the stage has exploded into a veritable fashion earthquake. This isn't just about changing the colour of tutus, darling. It’s a sign that we’re in a whole new era of balletic expression.

I mean, can you imagine what the grand dames of ballet are thinking? Their little heartbeats, all those years spent gracefully tiptoeing through their careers, they're probably freaking out right now. "The girls will be dancing in the buff!" I can just hear them clutching their pearls over a little splash of blue! 😄

Here’s the thing – why do we stick to tradition? We're living in the age of kaleidoscopic couture. Look at McQueen! Look at Galliano! Ballet needs to take its cue from the fashion world. It needs to be bold, it needs to be exciting, and it needs to reflect our world. And darling, there’s nothing boring about that!

You know, my old teacher, Miss Delacroix, would have flipped her bun! Her own tutus were all beige. We even had to use flesh-coloured tights to match her "classic" aesthetic. It wasn’t ballet! It was torture! I'm surprised I didn’t spontaneously combust in a frenzy of beige leotards!

But darling, let's look at this whole revolution from a different angle. Let's talk about leotards! I'm thrilled to say that leotard designers are catching up. Forget the traditional flesh-coloured, let’s throw in a splash of green, purple, or even, whisper it, orange! (Can you imagine an entire ensemble of tangoing ballerinas clad in tangerine leotards? Absolutely delightful! 😂 )

But hold your horses! It's not just about colour, it's about form too! They’re starting to embrace cuts, embellishments, even the odd (gasp!) mesh panel, a bold splash of feathers... And the younger dancers are the ones leading the charge. The seasoned professionals, they're more concerned about whether they can turn en pointe in their new outfit (which I believe they absolutely can). And while some people may be scandalized by this little rebellion, let me tell you something, my dears, I'm all for it. And trust me, if it makes a little pink-tutu wearing old lady like myself start looking for new fashion finds, well then, let the tutus of all the colours of the rainbow fly! 💖

So, here's to the new era of balletic freedom! I'm celebrating a kaleidoscope of colour, daring designs, and above all, an exciting and vibrant art form that doesn’t stand still for a minute! Let’s hear it for those fabulous new tutus. They are simply a delight! 🎊

Here are a few of my top tutu picks of the new season!

  • The Peacock Plum: It’s not all about colour darling, sometimes it's about design. The Peacock Plum is a white, oh so classic white tutu, with bold, ruffled tiers at the waist that mimic the magnificent feathers of a peacock. Stunning!
  • The Midnight Galaxy: This deep, midnight blue tutu is an absolute knockout. Adorned with thousands of sequins, it looks like the night sky shimmering with stardust. Oh my, just imagine it twinkling under the stage lights!
  • The Saffron Sunset: Now this is a bold move! The Saffron Sunset, inspired by a tropical sunrise, is an orange tutu (you heard me right, orange!) accented with delicate, white feathers for the most delightful balletic sunset!

The ballet world is about to take on a whole new colour scheme, and I'm ready to embrace the whirlwind of style and grace. Let’s give a big cheer to all those brave ballerinas out there. Thank you for letting us live in your world and making it even more beautiful! ✨
