Tutu and Ballet News

Well, darling, it's that time of the month again - yes, it's time to get your tutus out and twirl! Because 02nd September 2005, darlings, marks the official International Tutu Day! Now, you may think "Tutu Day? Is this some sort of elaborate joke, darling?" But trust me, my dears, this is the real deal! And you better believe this isn't just another run-of-the-mill 'celebration' either, darling. We're talking about a day to celebrate the ultimate symbol of elegance, grace and, yes, a touch of pure frivolity โ€“ the humble, but oh-so-divine, tutu!

But before you all rush to your nearest ballet store and start demanding to be measured for a fluffy, voluminous concoction of pink tulle, let's get a bit of history into this, shall we? (As much as it pains me to interrupt our tutus with a little history!) Because trust me, my darlings, there's far more to the humble tutu than you'd think. I mean, can you even imagine Swan Lake in your little black dress?

The Early Days (A brief history, I promise!):

Right then, back in the 1800s, ballet dancers wore these, well, let's call them 'things,' made of heavy, cumbersome fabrics that hindered their movements more than they did help them, darlings. Not a good look, or a graceful move, for our ballerinas. But then came our lovely Marie Taglioni - the epitome of lightness and grace, who literally redefined what 'dance' meant at the time. (Her moves, they were beyond anything ever seen before!)

And how did this legend of a dancer get us to the glorious tutu of today, you may ask? Why, darling, through her desire for more freedom on stage! And, oh, how she got it!

Marie demanded for herself - and ultimately for all ballerinas to come - the ability to really MOVE, to truly fly through the air. Thus, darling, the first tutus appeared. These earlier creations were very practical (no, I'm not using that word lightly!), made of thin fabric, light, airy and perfectly crafted to enable a graceful glide through the dance studio. Well, we can certainly thank Marie Taglioni for a little freedom of movement, eh?

Now, as with all great fashions, darling, tutus also had their phases - short, full, puffy, slim, a whole multitude of styles, each representing the current era of dance, and we're still not finished, you'd best believe! There are always new creations appearing and yes, tutus evolve too! As it should be, for truly what else is fashion if not a dance through time?

And now the 'New Age' Tutu:

Darling, I think the most important question we must ask is, 'What makes the Tutu so special? Why this bit of fabric, what is it that makes this dress so beloved by women, men and children across the globe?" (yes, yes, I have seen men in tutus! We can talk about that another day) Let's examine the many facets that make this piece of clothing, an absolute gem!

Well, let me tell you, the tutu, it represents a whole attitude of fun and joie de vivre! Now that's what I call fashionable, eh? From childhood memories of endless twirling, through the iconic dancers of the 20th century, and even onto today's contemporary, groundbreaking ballet performances, the tutu continues to delight, mesmerise and amaze us all.

But wait! There's more, darling, so much more. This beautiful symbol of dance also reminds us to move, to embrace the beauty of lightness and grace in all that we do. Don't believe me? Have you seen the glorious moves in a ballet performance? Do you think it's simply about the dress? Absolutely not! The grace, the effortless elegance, the storytelling? The dress is just the beginning. Think of it as the perfect metaphor for how you wish to live your life, eh? Light, airy, beautiful, powerful!

International Tutu Day: A Day To Celebrate!

Okay, now let's talk celebrations. How do you best celebrate such a glamorous, joyous event? The possibilities are simply endless! Why, we're talking about a full-blown day dedicated to swirling, pirouette-ing, and yes, absolutely demanding that people dance with you, no excuses! The day is dedicated to honouring all things tutu and, frankly, everything fabulous! Now is your chance, darling! Let the world know your inner tutu is yearning to express itself. Because if it can be worn for ballet, then it can be worn for absolutely everything. Remember, darling, life's just a big dance floor. This is a day for celebrating our very best selves, the embodiment of "living life like it's one giant twirl." And trust me, a little twirl always puts you in a better mood! Don't believe me, try it out.

Let's unleash that ballerina spirit, the carefree and beautiful persona we all hold inside! Now here are just a few tips on how to properly embrace your inner tutu and celebrate 'International Tutu Day!'

Ideas for Tutu-ing It Up (just a few!):

  • Don your own tutu, even if you're not dancing, you deserve a little extra fabulousness in your day.
  • Invite your friends to celebrate. Have a dance party! I'd suggest a playlist of pure classical music. A proper ballet party would not be complete without some Tchaikovsky, now would it?
  • If you don't know what kind of tutu to wear (the horror, I know) you can even wear it in any style, with jeans or a long gown, anything that screams 'I am in control, yet elegant and happy' Yes, darling, embrace this 'attitude' and make it your own!
  • Make tutus for the kiddos and give them all a big twirling hug! Now wouldn't that be something magical to watch, the wonder of it? Don't forget, dear ones, everyone is a dancer at heart! And you should help bring that out.
  • Or go wild! Go all out. If there's any day for wearing a pink tutu, it's today!
  • Create a magnificent ballet dance inspired 'makeover'. Use the colors pink and white! Because who wouldn't like to look like they just stepped out of a fairytale, my dear?

So go forth, my dears, and celebrate this wonderful day! And remember, darling, life, at its best, is truly a wonderful and fun dance, whether you are wearing a tutu or not. We're all born dancers at heart, and all it takes is a little twirl to release that joy.
