Tutu and Ballet News

tutu much trouble?
Oh darling, it's happened again! Another day, another drama unfolding in the world of ballet, and this time, it's all about tutus! Imagine my shock (and frankly, darling, my absolute horror) when I heard the news - a whole troupe of ballerinas at the Royal Ballet, refusing to wear their pink tutus, you see? It seems this whole situation stems from, of all things, a clash of colours! Now, I know, I know - the whole "white vs. pink" argument has been going on for years (what will they think of next, darling?) but for ballet dancers? It's just simply unacceptable! We all know it's the ultimate fashion showdown: pink for that "classic", sweet and dainty look - all those little girls swooning at their little princesses; and white - for the ultra-modern, edgy, and slightly, well, dare I say "controversial" vibe.
Well, it all started, you see, when some "innovative" choreographer (we know what they're like, love!), insisted that the ballerinas wear these ultra-modern, minimalist white tutus for their next performance. They say it was to "symbolise purity, grace, and something something... something else." But dear, let's be honest, they're just trying to be avant-garde - I swear they're obsessed with it! The trouble is, most of these darling ballerinas (I must say I love those dear girls - such dedication, such discipline!) felt their personalities were being stifled. They love their fluffy, pretty pink tutus, they really do! You know, they can't resist that cute, frilly look. And let's face it, when it comes to those ballerina-bun-topped, doe-eyed sweethearts, they really look best in pink - I mean, can you imagine them wearing the black, studded leather tutus you see those punk dancers wear, dear?
Now, I think we should talk about these white tutus, darling! We can't just pretend they don't exist. They're definitely in, well, a trend if you like, because there's so much drama with them - even those fashion houses on those catwalks seem to have gone bonkers for them! You just know when someone’s trying too hard when all they're wearing are white things from head to toe. It’s all a bit... much, darling, just a bit much. There's something about that colour - it’s so...so clean - like some modern-day art exhibit, and to be honest, it makes my head spin a bit.
As a ballerina of yesteryear, I’ll have to confess that pink tutus are much more flattering on the average figure (they do give you the most gorgeous figure) – after all, why do you think ballerinas spend years on pointe training? And we know how much ballerinas love pointe, those pretty pink toe shoes and that perfectly executed *releve*, so beautifully and gracefully executed (or rather, seemingly effortless – another thing those dancers love to make seem like the most simple of things) - it's all in the pink tutus - so elegant, so graceful, oh so perfectly feminine!
However, there are some interesting exceptions - those dark, mysterious, dramatic swans (they love to do black swan, it's always so captivating – but to be honest, sometimes it’s just so, well, dramatic!). They always wear white – their white tutus are very impressive (they're really not much of a 'dance, dance, twirl' kinda girl - they’re far more "sit, pose, pout" than the bright-eyed 'happy little pink ballerina'. But they always bring the audience to a hushed stillness – it’s an absolute spectacle!). And let's not forget those cheeky, cheeky, 'little mouse' ballerinas (it’s always an amusing act for an audience – there's always something delightful about it) in the nutcracker ( darling! They love to wear those 'tutus') . They're a little less feminine – a little bit on the “tough and tomboyish side”.
Well, this ballet situation really just shows you, you know, how important that ‘tutu situation’ really is. Just goes to show how fashion, darling, can actually rule your life and affect how we dance (it's something about a pretty outfit - just the right combination and those darling, dreamy dancers – we do get quite taken in, and frankly, that’s what they’re relying on!). Let's face it - a good, decent tutu (not forgetting those little bows - we can’t go on without a little bow now, can we, darling?) will always be a showstopper – so beautiful and elegant – such a delicate work of art. And when I think about it, it makes perfect sense - those ballerinas, dancing so flawlessly, wearing all that tulle and sparkles - pure magic. So next time you’re at the ballet darling, take a look at the costumes and the ballerinas - we'll see it's the tutus, all the time, which have to be in order - it really all starts with that beautiful tutu and it ends with that beautiful tutu - but be careful, if those 'pink’ ballet ballerinas and those ‘white’ tutu lovers aren't careful they'll have us all feeling *en pointe* on both sides of the battle.
