The Tutu-mentary: Why We Love The Humble Ballet Dress

My darlings, it's the 29th of March, 2006, and today we're talking about tutus. You know, the embodiment of femininity, the quintessential ballet dress that is more than just a costume; it's a cultural symbol, a statement piece, and a testament to the power of a good frill. And what could be more divine than a beautiful ballet tutu, with its billowing layers, perfect pirouette-ability and just the right amount of sparkle?

A Brief History of The Tutu's Glory

It’s no secret that ballet has a storied history. I’m sure many of you will remember from school that the origins of ballet date all the way back to the 15th century. We have to thank, ahem, those gorgeous men of the Renaissance court for kick-starting ballet's fashion trend, back when, if you can believe it, women didn’t actually even wear skirts (cue shocked gasp). In fact, the earliest forms of ballet used pants. (Can you imagine?! It's a total tragedy). Luckily, it didn't take long for those delightful, little wispy skirts that we know and love today, to rise up from the ashes of a bygone era (and what an era it was!) - and the ballet skirt was finally given its own dedicated name – the tutu.

I’ve got to say, even today, the tutu has maintained its reputation as the absolute undisputed Queen of the dance world. Just look at some of the greats who’ve rocked a tutu, like Margot Fonteyn and Svetlana Zakharova (and my personal favorite, Natalia Makarova!), these ballerinas weren't just talented performers - they were tutu-wearers, a truly impressive title, in my humble opinion.

Why Tutu? Why Now? Why Does it Make me Want to Dance?

Of course, it's not enough to just *love* a tutu – I need to tell you what makes this item of clothing so spectacular:

  • The Silhouette: You just can't go wrong with a tutu - they're basically the quintessential “dancer's" silhouette! With those fabulous layers and fluffy fabrics (not to mention the fact that it practically lifts you off the ground!), you know a ballerina in a tutu is about to show us what a beautiful performance looks like!
  • The Color: You really cannot go wrong with a classic tutu color; there's the divine, the romantic, the breathtaking: Pink. And let’s not forget our angelic White. These colours scream "ballet" and will leave you utterly breathless, whether you’re a ballerina, a dancer or a spectator.
  • The Materials: Okay, we're being serious for a minute. It's not just any fabric - tutus use lightweight, strong, flexible materials to move with the dancers and give them maximum range of motion!

Oh, my darling readers, the list goes on and on!

So Go Out And Embrace Your Inner Tutu

Now that you understand what makes the humble ballet tutu so spectacular, it's time to celebrate it!

  • Find your inner Ballerina - It doesn’t matter what your skill level or age - put on your leotard and find a tutu to dance in, because, seriously, who needs a stage when you’ve got a room, a little bit of music and a tutu?

  • Dance your worries away! If the world seems too heavy, you can’t escape into fantasy fiction books fast enough or life just keeps throwing those *awful* curveballs (you know, the kind that force you to have a large glass of wine before midday and maybe put on some questionable makeup). There's one solution to cure the blues and leave all the drama in the dust - dance. A tutu will magically transport you to a wonderful place, I guarantee you!
  • Embrace the drama and fluff: When’s the last time you felt like you could wear the ultimate feminine outfit? A tutu will make you feel like the star of your own show, and let's face it - we've all got that leading lady within us.

Remember: Every day can be a Tutu Day, as long as you want it to be!

My darlings, go forth, embrace the tutus, and let your inner ballerina shine. Have a glorious ballet-tastic day!
