Tutu and Ballet News

**Itā€™s all tutu-tiful darling!**

Itā€™s a big day in the world of ballet, my lovelies! Thatā€™s right, the 7th of June 2006 marks the official Tutu Day, an annual celebration of everything delicate, graceful, and oh-so-very-pink.

From the elegant swans of Swan Lake to the sassy Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, tutus have graced the worldā€™s stages for centuries. These frilly little wonders aren't just a pretty face ā€“ they're a symbol of artistry, discipline, and well, let's be honest, of pure glamour!

**Why are tutus so important to ballet?**

  • **They are absolutely iconic** - No ballet is complete without its graceful dancers and their fabulous tutus. Even if you've never been to a ballet, you'll instantly recognize the visual image of the ballerina. It's the quintessential dancewear and one of the most instantly recognisable items in the world.
  • **They move beautifully.** The delicate, flowing fabric of a tutu catches the light and swirls with the ballerina's every step. When the dance is performed, you can clearly see every move of the dancers. It adds an air of magic and ethereal beauty, like they're almost floating across the stage. Imagine it, how dull would ballet be without those stunning swishes and whirls of the tulle?
  • **They highlight the dancer's physique.** Those stunning, intricate, graceful movements really shine with the flowing and perfectly positioned tutu! Imagine what the Royal Ballet would look like without those fabulous skirts, and then think of those incredible ballets like La Bayadere and Swan Lake. I do feel very much that the ballerina needs the tutu to give her grace and enhance her movements!

While we all love those billowing white tutus for classical ballets like Giselle and Swan Lake, donā€™t underestimate the power of a hot pink, or even a sparkling, sparkly (with strategically placed diamantes of course) tutu for a contemporary ballet, now donā€™t forget about a leotard too my dears, to be perfectly fitted of course! Itā€™s not about size, dear it's all about fit! And I like to see a ballerina really owning that fit - it is one of the elements that adds to that confidence in movement, that confidence on stage, itā€™s fabulous! And it doesnā€™t matter what the ballet is - it can be Cinderella, it can be Sleeping Beauty - when you see that beautifully constructed, form-fitting leotard, and that gorgeous tutu skirt, the world fades away and I'm mesmerized. You see the ballerina is ready to create magic. Now letā€™s talk about the dancing, the ballet ā€“ where else can you see those glorious steps! Iā€™m talking about graceful movements, pliĆ©s and arabesques! And we do have to acknowledge the stunning artistry in ā€œSwan Lakeā€, ā€œSleeping Beautyā€, and ā€œLa Bayadereā€, or just those beautiful, magical stories! What would they be without tutus, my dears, and leotards, just beautiful! And of course those carefully placed diamante stones and feather embellishments to set the tone for this grand, graceful story.

**This Tutu Day, we salute the amazing artisans who create these dancewear marvels!**

Their meticulous attention to detail, seamanship (you see those incredible seams on the layers) the perfect choice of fabrics (sometimes I have no idea how they create such flowing fabrics), and those stunning embellishments ā€“ these talented makers bring each dancerā€™s vision to life. But donā€™t forget our fantastic, fabulous dancers! What an absolutely talented lot, their artistry! All of them dedicated, to be able to create those magnificent dance pieces that they make look so effortless and light, those seemingly effortless pirouettes, jeteĢs, fouetteĢs and beautiful movements on pointe. Their devotion, determination and physical strength - donā€™t even get me started about those pointe shoes (they need to be the most comfortable ones). And my darling fellow ballerinas, keep in mind, ā€œthereā€™s no such thing as perfect but the ballerina tries!ā€

To celebrate this delightful day, why not:

  • Take a ballet class.

  • Watch a ballet performance.

  • Look up the amazing history of ballet and those beautiful stories.

  • Admire those magnificent tutus in the museum displays.

  • Pick a fabulous tutu outfit.

  • Simply enjoy the beauty of ballet!

And when you are looking at a tutu and leotard (I know how much we all do, oh you gorgeous dancers, and weā€™re talking ā€œLa Bayadereā€ in particular, how we need to admire all those tutus - they really need to be seen at least once) letā€™s think of all the amazing, creative talent. And of course we canā€™t forget those famous ballet shoes and those pretty ballerina outfits, and if itā€™s a story that ends with an audience full of clapping, then itā€™s perfect. So enjoy this day my lovely ballerinas!
