Ballet: The Big Tutu-rial!

My darlings, it’s that time of year again - the time when the leaves turn golden, the air gets crisp and, yes, the inevitable Christmas shopping begins. But hold your horses! Before we get swept up in the whirlwind of mince pies and gift wrapping, let's do a little pirouette back to something a little lighter, a little more elegant, a little… pink!

Yes, dear readers, it's the day to discuss what we dance lovers truly live for: the **tutu**. That fabulous, frilly symbol of grace and elegance that has captured hearts and graced stages since, well, since ballet became the elegant and mesmerizing artform it is today. It's a love story, you see, between ballerina and tulle - and you can’t have one without the other!

Now, I know what you’re thinking. "Isn't a tutu just…a dress for dancers?" And, well, yes, you’re not wrong, but my darlings, there's SO MUCH MORE to a tutu than meets the eye!

Let's take a closer look, shall we?

First, the classics, of course!
  • The Romantic Tutu, a light, whimsical, layered wonder - often **white** - that makes the ballerina look like a wisp of air as she dances. This is the "classic" look, perfect for dreamy ballets like “Giselle” - you just need to add in some long white gloves and some lovely dramatic hair for that extra ‘something’!
  • The Tutu a la Francaise, which we must say, is simply stunning. This tutu is short, circular, and boasts those magnificent multi-layers that makes us go "Wow"! It gives that truly extravagant, stage-presence look and - let’s face it - adds just that much more drama to the dance itself.

Now, these are the ‘classics’, but it doesn’t end there. The tutu has had a makeover over the years, and frankly, it’s only got more fabulous!

So, what are we dancing with today?
  • The "Modern" Tutu: this can range from a little "layered" tutu – a touch shorter but not as dramatic, with fewer layers - to one made with panels of tulle – almost more "dress"-like, and in a modern array of colors: blacks, silvers and even blues! It’s just as fabulous but definitely has a little less, “Let’s Put On A Show”, and a little more “Dance Like You Mean It” vibe!
  • And let's not forget the ever-so-important leotard. The leotard is like the “foundation” garment that keeps everything looking so perfectly “ballet”! There are leotards of all colours, designs and patterns, but when choosing, we must think: "will this blend with my tutu?". It’s a big day. We need to stand out…and we can't have too much going on!

No matter what "style" tutu you choose, you'll always make a fabulous entrance, and a truly glamorous exit - especially when that tutu is a dazzling **pink** and you’re holding an oversized flower.

But what about you? What's YOUR favourite type of tutu? Send us your “tutu love letter" with a photo of your own dance costume!
