Tutu and Ballet News

Darling readers, gather round! It’s time for a dose of ballet-infused fun, sprinkled with a pinch of sparkle and a dollop of frothy tutu delight! Today, my loves, we celebrate the magical, whimsical world of the ballerina - and by that I mean the outfit, of course. Not the pirouettes and jetés (though let's not pretend those aren't absolutely exquisite!). It's 12th May, 2007, the day we declare the pink or white tutu to be a national treasure! And we'll get to the heart of this delicious revelation soon enough. First, allow me to indulge in a little anecdote.

I have a confession. Growing up, I didn’t quite get the allure of the ballet, darling. I mean, it was all so graceful, fluid, sophisticated, and frankly, exhausting. My youthful energy was reserved for cartwheels, round-off back handsprings (my favourite), and all the other tomfoolery you might associate with an energetic little girl. Ballet was something for those delicate, poised souls who could make it look effortless, with perfect control and, oh darling, a pink or white tutu.

But then came the turning point. It wasn’t an actual turning point, rather a slow burn, like a soufflé perfectly rising in the oven, as if by magic. This happened while on holiday in Nice, sitting by the Riviera sea, enjoying the scent of sunscreen and orange blossom, a truly romantic and divine blend. And that’s where it hit me – that a ballerina, in all her grace and glory, embodies elegance and sophistication, in that iconic white or pink tutu. The kind of elegance and sophistication that makes you want to swoon like a gentleman at the opera.

This elegant revelation came in the form of an epiphany – the perfect outfit for an impromptu beachside soirée (which didn’t actually happen) is not just a swimsuit, no, no, no… the epitome of beach-side style must be, ladies and gentlemen, a classic, perfectly pink or white tutu!

Imagine this. Sun-drenched skin, cool ocean breezes blowing through a perfect hairstyle, with nary a hair out of place (a feat only achievable by the goddesses of hairstyling). Then, the magnificent spectacle of a white or pink tutu gently billowing around you as you twirl on the sand! Picture it darling, it’s enough to make you giddy. And that, my dear reader, is what this momentous day is all about!

However, before we get ahead of ourselves and create a fashion catastrophe, a word of caution.

We must ensure this newfound appreciation of the ballerina’s sartorial delight, namely the tutu, does not result in an onslaught of tulle disasters, because dear reader, even a graceful ballet requires impeccable execution.

Here is where my little piece of fashion wisdom comes into play:

  • A tutu, if one were to embrace this new style, should be a beacon of perfection and elegance, darling, never anything remotely resembling a DIY project that just looks tragic (especially as we approach the silly season, that is, Christmas). Think elegance not awkwardness.
  • The perfect ballerina-inspired ensemble will always have a light, airy feel to it, especially on those summer days that last forever and make you crave sunscreen and cold watermelon.
  • One mustn’t forget the quintessential ballerina-style essential - the classic leotard. And when I say "classic," it should ideally be something that hugs those gorgeous curves like a second skin but, dear reader, you may need a tailor for that and, well, what fun would that be.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment! Throw on a statement necklace with pearls and add a bit of glitz – maybe a sparkly scarf? Let’s face it darling, just imagine the joy that sparkly things bring!

And for the love of all that is chic, don't be a "Mary" darling! A ballerina is the picture of femininity, graceful and elegant, think " Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday," not something reminiscent of that terrible little lamb with an equally terrible little lamb costume that everyone thought was a wonderful idea.

So my darlings, as we stand poised to embrace the joy and sophistication that a pink or white tutu brings, remember: Less is always more, elegance conquers all and it's never, ever a mistake to add a little bit of sparkle!

Until next time my dears, remember:

  • Keep your sparkle top-notch
  • Be confident and don't let anyone steal your shine
  • Never forget a good splash of perfume to accentuate that inner goddess

Have a lovely and perfectly glamorous week!
