Ballet: A Seriously Chic Sport?

It's no secret that I'm obsessed with all things ballet. The delicate movements, the graceful leaps, the stunning costumes – I'm completely besotted! But lately, I've been wondering: is ballet really a serious sport? After all, you don't see a ballet dancer in the Olympics (though they definitely deserve a medal in the grace department!).

So, dear readers, I've embarked on a quest to get to the bottom of this question, and let me tell you, it's been quite the adventure.

I first visited a ballet studio in the heart of London's theatre district, and oh my, the place was buzzing. Young dancers, all with impossibly long limbs and an effortless elegance, were pirouette-ing and arabesque-ing with such precision it made my head spin. Their costumes were a sight to behold, with their crisp, white tutus and delicate, pink leotards shimmering in the light.

I practically gasped! The graceful beauty of these ballerinas was breathtaking – their artistry was inspiring! My quest was beginning to lead me in a decidedly glamorous direction.

"Don't let the frills fool you," the teacher, a sprightly, silver-haired woman with an air of absolute authority, said with a mischievous twinkle in her eye. "Ballet requires incredible strength, flexibility, and dedication. These dancers work their bodies like athletes, training for hours on end."

And she was right. Watching these dancers, their every muscle honed and trained, it was clear that ballet was as demanding as any other sport. In fact, I’m sure it’s way harder than even marathon running! These athletes of dance, balancing their elegant poses with feats of strength, definitely deserve to be considered amongst the best athletes.

I then spoke to some professional ballet dancers who, after their rigorous training sessions and exhausting performances, said that ballet is, without doubt, one of the toughest forms of exercise they’ve ever come across.

But let's not forget the sheer joy of ballet! When those dancers leap across the stage, they truly seem to be flying, weightless and utterly carefree. It's infectious, that joy. It makes you want to get up and pirouette along with them. Of course, you’d look more like a penguin than a professional but still… the thought is there.

I concluded my quest, convinced that ballet, despite its graceful, ethereal reputation, is undeniably a serious sport. Just ask those dancers – you won’t need any convincing. Ballet requires not just elegance but an incredible amount of athleticism. So next time you see a ballet performance, give the dancers a big cheer. They are serious athletes and incredible performers who definitely deserve your appreciation. Their athleticism is no joke and requires hours and hours of rigorous training – this is one serious form of sport, and these performers are masters of their craft!

My Ballet Essentials:

I think the graceful, athletic, balletic world deserves a little celebration, so here are a few of my favorite things that add that "je ne sais quoi" to any outfit:

  • A beautifully elegant pair of ballet flats - just the thing for that effortlessly stylish look, in both chic black and classic nude – there are styles for every occasion.
  • A gorgeous tulle skirt for a bit of playful glamour – just picture yourself twirling in the sunlight.
  • And lastly, a sparkling ballerina brooch – perfect for adding a touch of ballet magic to a simple outfit.

I simply can’t get enough of ballet’s glamour and grace, and after all that research, I feel that a spot on the Olympic team would be well deserved by these gifted athletes. I’ve now gone back to my life and ballet workouts with even more appreciation – if I’m going to become a graceful swan (or at least a not-too-wobbly, graceful ballerina), I’ve got some serious practice ahead of me.
