Tutu and Ballet News

**A Tutus-ful Truth: The Ballerina's Secret Life**

Darling, let's face it, the life of a ballerina isn't all tutus and twirls, you know? We may appear graceful, elegant, even ethereal - and, yes, the tutus are simply divine, don't you agree? The white ones for Swan Lake are exquisite, so romantic. I simply adore the powder pink ones they wear in The Nutcracker; oh, so whimsical. But don't be fooled, my darlings. It's not all sequins and pirouettes.

We ballerina swans, you see, are far from perfect. And, don't tell the director, I might be slightly addicted to sugar, and no, I do not mean the sweet, dainty sugarplum fairy kind. Those endless 'grand jetés' demand, like, mega amounts of energy, which means a diet heavy on those tempting, delicious sugar-filled, fattening treats. The life of a ballerina, especially for us lead roles, demands constant energy. So yes, I have a penchant for devouring my weight in chocolate, a rather unfortunate side-effect, I know, of those seemingly endless rehearsals.

Then there's the whole leotard situation, you know? Don't be fooled, my loves, they're not at all the figure-flattering items you may imagine! The ones in ballet class are, well, how to say this nicely, they're practical but frankly, far from fabulous. Oh, to be back on the red carpet with a luxurious, satin gown and a full, glamorous skirt!

My secret indulgence is the most deliciously fluffy, decadent cream you have ever tasted in this divine coffee house on 25th Street called 'The Tutu & The Toffee'. A touch naughty and entirely, scandalously, fabulously decadent! Oh, and they have the most glorious lemon drizzle cake, too!

And while the boys in our world of ballet might look oh-so suave in their leotards, trust me, darlings, behind the scenes they are a very different beast. Not nearly so sleek and, dare I say, glamorous. More like a, let's say, "furry" and, ahem, "sweaty" beast, when you really look closer at them in rehearsals! Not quite as graceful as we, oh dear no, they are rather more like lumbering elephants trying to master a swan dive - the thought does rather make me chuckle, to be honest!

So let's take a peek behind the curtain, shall we? A sneak peek into a ballerina's real life:

  • We're not all as flexible as you think.
  • Oh, the horror of the splits! My oh, my, I sometimes have to push myself so hard to reach that perfect, graceful position! A ballerina's life is filled with pain. Yes, darling, a secret we'd rather not reveal. There's a lot of, well, groaning and grumbling behind those perfect postures you see in the show!

  • We hate wearing the pointe shoes.
  • I don't think anyone outside the ballet world really knows this one. These ridiculous, uncomfortable things were not made for comfort! They cause havoc with the skin around our toes! We just learn to tough it out for those big performance nights!

  • Our makeup can be... questionable.
  • Have you ever tried to put on foundation in a cramped, sweaty dressing room, you know, in a rush for the show to begin, with a tiny mirror?! It is not a glamorous, high fashion affair, my darlings, I promise you that. Our makeup looks good in the lighting of the stage, but I guarantee you under ordinary lights, in normal daylight, it's rather an unglamorous sight! Our director insists on it! Something about a strong, bold eye being key to making the characters on stage, well, you know, 'intense', that is his 'artistry', he tells us. Well, frankly, in daylight it makes us look, well, like, you know, circus clowns!

  • We're constantly hungry.
  • That rigorous workout, darlings, makes a ballerina seriously hungry! The thought of having a 'no-carb' diet, oh, I cannot bear it! Oh, dear. And what about the whole ‘staying lean’ pressure - don’t even get me started. The poor boys, it doesn’t really apply to them, though. Perhaps they could be tempted with chocolate if I really put my mind to it, but then, they probably think it's rather girly to do anything like that! You know how these ballet boys are.

  • Our lives aren’t all about tutus.
  • I might live in tutus on stage but, to be frank, I enjoy an entirely different style in my off time - oh yes, think more glam rock goddess than graceful swan - and my beloved black dress is my true staple piece. After all, black, is a classic, is it not? And I can wear it pretty much everywhere, from that fabulous tapas bar down on the High Street to my favourite sushi restaurant in Soho. And let's not forget, my much loved and quite fabulous wardrobe of red-soled stilettos - now that is what a real woman needs, darlings. You could never pull off dancing a ballet in a pair of those, but for walking to and fro in town, well, nothing quite beats them, can it?

  • We may be professional ballerinas, but we're not perfect.
  • I admit, there's a great big side of 'real' me in this ballerina, darlings! A slightly quirky side that emerges from the stage - that 'oh dear', what will everyone think 'side'.

So next time you see a ballerina pirouetting, darling, remember this: beneath that perfect pose, that divine tutu, and even those oh-so-refined movements, hides a touch of a real, true-to-life character! We might look poised, refined and quite fabulous, but we have, you see, our own rather wonderfully 'normal' and 'not quite as perfect' lives, just like you, my darlings!
