Tutu and Ballet News

Oh, darlings! It’s a Leap Year, and you know what that means? It's time to leap, twirl and pirouette our way into a whole new world of ballet! But don't worry, we're not talking about those stiff, serious, high-brow ballets that make you want to reach for the biscuit tin (we've all been there!).

We're talking about ballet with a dash of humour, a sprinkle of sparkle, and just a little bit of whimsy. It's time to embrace the leotard, darling! So dust off those satin slippers and get ready for a little dose of "Ballet for the Rest of Us".

Now, you may think that ballet is all about being impossibly graceful and impossibly thin, with perfectly sculpted limbs and an aura of effortless perfection. Let's face it, we've all been subjected to images of those impossibly beautiful ballerinas with their perfect ponytails, seemingly effortless pliés and endless legs in those white tutus that, frankly, make you wonder how they even walk to the loo. But this is a new dawn, darling. A new era for the ordinary, yet utterly fabulous woman who just wants to dance and feel glorious!

I'm here to tell you that ballet is not only for the swan-like figures you see gracing the stage of the Royal Opera House. It's for everyone! Whether you've got a little wiggle in your waist, a slight jiggle in your thighs, or your stomach prefers a more rounded, "perfectly imperfect" shape (let’s face it, there are no perfect figures in the real world, just a fabulous variety!), ballet can help you unleash the graceful, elegant, and yes, slightly silly, ballerina within!

Let's start with the most important element of any ballet outfit - the leotard. Forget those flimsy, unforgiving numbers that you see on those "perfect" ballerinas. We want leotards with colour, patterns, and dare I say, a bit of sparkle! A leotard is all about making you feel empowered, beautiful and oh, so very ready to move!

Forget boring black, let's get into a party mood! Here's my selection:
  • A shocking pink leotard with black polka dots. It will scream confidence and give your friends serious “OMG!” envy!
  • A leopard-print leotard that will channel your inner animal. Yes, you’re ready to pounce on those complex dance steps.
  • A vintage, red leotard - all you need is a bouffant to complete the perfect 60s dance look! Don’t worry about the ‘poofy hair’ it’s chic and back in fashion!
  • A shimmering metallic silver leotard to reflect all the fun! Because life’s all about making a sparkling statement, darlings. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just sensational!

Now, onto the tutu. Let’s be honest, the white, poofy tutus have served their time - let’s embrace a touch of colour, even a touch of fun. We can take on this piece of ballet history and give it a little make-over! Think layers of tulle, different coloured tulles (dare I even mention pink, white, and orange? I've always thought a pastel rainbow tutu would be quite fabulous!) - and why not get those creative juices flowing! This is all about self-expression. Just like those fab shoes in “Sex and The City”! The sky’s the limit, baby!

Forget the dainty pink ribbons or the neat, perfect hair buns of the past. Think, ‘Boho’, think loose waves with colourful hair ribbons or even some diamante clips - whatever floats your boat, darling. Forget the stuffy image of ballet; we're taking this dance form and we're injecting it with personality and style.

Now, you don’t want to be out in public looking like you’ve just stepped out of an art class with acrylic paint all over your clothes, and neither do you want to be uncomfortable, so it’s best to take it one step at a time (well, what would a dance piece be without those essential ‘steps’). Let’s focus on what looks fabulous, comfortable and fun!

Here’s a breakdown for the ultimate in dance chic:
  • The first steps are, dare I say, "easy peasy lemon squeezy" for everyone. We are looking for what feels comfortable and looks stylish! So, some comfortable tights (it’s a clichĂ©, I know, but black is good!) and of course, those shoes - comfy shoes! Nothing’s worse than uncomfortable shoes that make you feel awkward when you’re dancing or getting around in that fab outfit! Ballet flats or dance shoes are always a good choice! Oh, and ladies, it’s definitely a good idea to invest in an outfit that flatters, or maybe even adds to those fabulous curves you already have.
  • Now for that essential element, the leotard. Yes, you've got the basic element down pat (tights, comfortable footwear and your “favourite dance attire”), now for that ultimate element which sets the stage for this ballet party (not party as in ‘going out dancing, with an outlandish look,’ but, "a gathering of your fab best friend dance gang"). Go on! Step into the leotard of your dreams, don a tutu, or even ditch the tutu and wear a flowing chiffon skirt for an ethereal vibe! What about those feather boas, or an outrageous, bright scarf?

Ultimately, darlings, it's about letting loose, embracing the playful side of ourselves and finding our inner ballerinas - no matter our shape or size, whatever our style. So, put on your leotard, a little bit of lipgloss, and get ready to dance! Just because it’s leap year doesn't mean you can’t take those first few ballet steps and show your individuality and confidence. Go for it and embrace your inner ballerina - we are ready for the best leap year of our lives!
