Tutu and Ballet News

Darling, it’s time for some tea and tittle-tattle! Have you heard? A new fashion trend is sweeping the nation - tutus are the *it* garment for 1998, but we can’t quite get over their ridiculousness!

It's a whirlwind of feathers and frills out there, dears. You can practically hear the *swoosh* as women (and men, surprisingly!), waltz down the street like a ballerina caught in a gust of wind! Now, let’s get one thing straight: tutus have always been a bit out there. But now they’ve invaded our wardrobes, taking on every shade, texture, and design imaginable!

It started innocently enough, I think, with that famous *Barbie* film about the ballerina doll - the one where she dreams of twirling at the Royal Ballet! That movie gave a lot of little girls dreams of fluffy, pink perfection! And while those ballerina fantasies might be best left in our childhoods, a tutu trend just feels… so wrong.

What do we even call them now? They aren't 'ballroom dresses' anymore! And you’ll have to forgive my French, darling, but wearing a ‘tutu’ out and about is not exactly, shall we say, ‘decent.’ There’s not much coverage in the tutu! My personal favourite - and I mean ‘favourite’ as in *absurdity* – are these neon yellow tulle tutus that I spotted on Oxford Street just yesterday.

And why are tutus the ‘go to’ for the trendsetters now? Well, according to an *authoritative* (read: totally unreliable!) source from an online forum (oh darling, they're my favourite source of gossip!) the tutu trend is about embracing "our inner child" - that, or showing off some well-toned thighs that haven't seen the light of day in years!

There's also a bizarre belief out there that tutus “empower” us - how exactly a cloud of tulle can inspire me to write my great novel I simply do not understand, darling.

Now, before I go full 'Fashion Police', let’s be reasonable, shall we? This fad *will* die out eventually! And while some of you may think the whole tutu situation is downright laughable (and frankly I’m inclined to agree!), there is a small sliver of practicality that we simply can’t ignore. For some people, it might just make them a *bit* happier! (It certainly brightened up the London underground for a moment as a rather overweight gentleman sashayed past!)

So, if a few puffs of fabric and an excess of pink is enough to bring joy into some people's lives, then well, bless their cotton socks! But until this ‘trend’ blows over, just please remember, darling - tutus aren’t really meant for walking down the street. In fact, the *only* reason to don a tutu is if you’re taking a ballet class (or if you’re a tiny fairy princess at a wedding! But even then I prefer something a little bit more practical, wouldn't you?)

But even *I* must confess I do appreciate a good ballet performance, don't you? Now that's truly elegant! Especially a 'corps de ballet' dancing gracefully. (The 'corp de ballet' is a beautiful thing! A line of graceful and toned bodies, and no two legs exactly alike.) It really brings together that *dream* and *beauty* aspect, don’t you think, darling? And speaking of dreaminess…

Some tutu-related style tips: * If you do feel the urge to break out your inner ballerina, choose one in a dark and luxurious hue. Imagine black, emerald, or maybe midnight blue. * Now I know we want to avoid *gauche*, so add a touch of elegance by pairing your tulle masterpiece with sleek and chic attire. A fitted black jacket or maybe a luxurious satin top could work wonders!

Of course, my lovely, no style guide would be complete without some essential accessories:

  • A classic black beret or, for an added flair, a tiny top hat for a nod to that old school, Audrey Hepburn charm.
  • And who can forget the pièce de rĂŠsistance! A small vintage-inspired bag or, for an utterly 'downtown’ chic finish, try a baguette style chain bag - nothing *too* obvious, dear!

So, there you have it, my dears. A tutu-themed extravaganza for all you fashionistas! Remember, fashion is about having fun and, perhaps most importantly, embracing *what feels* right. But darling, just remember my words when choosing a tutu - stick to a *small, refined* one in black and wear it for ballet, not for the street!
