Tutu and Ballet News

Tutu-ly Brilliant!

Darling, it's Christmas Day! Ho ho ho! The day where we all get to indulge in mince pies and over-indulge in festive cheer! The day we all get to watch the Queen's Speech while battling our way through the mountain of leftover roast potatoes. And, of course, the day where we can revel in all things tutu!

It is, after all, the day where the most famous ballerina of them all ā€“ the sugar plum fairy! - takes centre stage in The Nutcracker, bringing a touch of magic and whimsical wonder to our lives.

But darling, I digress. Why am I prattling on about ballet?

Well, because Christmas is a time to indulge! To embrace the ridiculous! And, darling, let's be honest, the world of tutus is positively bonkers!

This festive season, the ballet world is in a total spin - the tutus are coming! The tulle is tumbling! And let me tell you, it's all simply fantastic!

The biggest news from the ballet world this festive season, dear reader, is that a new breed of tutus has arrived. Forget those frumpy, old-fashioned Victorian creations ā€“ think tulle thatā€™s bursting with va-va-voom!

Tutu Talk!

First, we have the ā€œHot Toddy Tutu.ā€ This beauty is made with a bold splash of colour that's as daring as a shot of Baileyā€™s on Christmas morning! It's just the ticket for any ballerina who wants to make a statement.

But darling, letā€™s be honest - some ballerinas are just a tad bitā€¦ ermā€¦ ā€œconservativeā€ (if youā€™re one of those people who still prefers a glass of sherry at Christmasā€¦ well darling, perhaps the "Hot Toddy Tutu" is a tad bit too much for you).

Thankfully, the designers have understood the needs of every ballet aficionado this Christmas and come up with a ā€œTutu For Allā€ attitude ā€“ including something that's even more understated, for the shyest and most demure ballerinas! Enter the ā€œFrozen Snowflakeā€ - it's a white, fluffy tulle wonder, almost too delicate for this earth. (Imagine: your dainty little pointe shoes sinking gently into a blanket of the most beautiful, soft snow...).

But what would Christmas be without a bit of sparkle, right? The ā€œCandy Cane Tutu ā€is for those who really like to get into the Christmas spirit (think - the ones who sprinkle Christmas glitter all over the Christmas treeā€¦ or wear festive jumper and matching Christmas tights!). Think sparkly red and white tulle - the ā€œCandy Cane Tutuā€ is more ā€œblingā€ than ā€œbah humbugā€, darling!

Now, darling, if you want to make your own tutu, I have a few tips:

  • Firstly, itā€™s essential to start with the right tulle. And I am talking real, pure silk tulle here. Not that cheap, polyester stuff you see in those mass-market stores. The right tulle will really make your tutu stand out, darlings!
  • Secondly, always trim the tulle with a good quality pair of shears, sharp enough to cut even the most robust material (and, darling, you would not believe how thick, heavy tulle is!). You don't want those scratchy, unruly edges. Trust me darling, the smooth, crisp edge will give your tutu the "elegant " and "sharp " edge it deserves.
  • Lastly, remember the most essential thing - the tutu is meant to be worn (it's not some dusty old piece of material hidden away in a costume cupboardā€¦ itā€™s for prancing around!). Wear your tutu with confidence and joie de vivre and youā€™ll be sure to feel like a true prima ballerina.

Merry Christmas and happy twirling everyone!
