Tutus: The Dance World's Ultimate Fashion Statement

Oh, darling, have you heard the latest fashion craze? Tutus! You know, those fluffy, little skirts that make even the most awkward of us look like ballerinas? They're all the rage this Spring, and I, your resident fashionista, simply *have* to share the news with you!

It's a truth universally acknowledged, that a tutu is never a bad look. Whether you're pirouetting your way through life, or just heading to the local supermarket for a bag of crisps, there's something utterly fabulous about twirling in a cloud of tulle.

And what's even more fabulous? Apparently, on the 1st of April 1998, some eccentric souls in Brighton actually formed a tutu-wearing, all-male ballet troupe. Talk about making a statement! Can you imagine it? A group of men, dressed like swans, pirouetting to the sound of Tchaikovsky! I'm sure they drew quite the crowd - probably mostly of gossiping grannies with a cuppa in hand and a “Ooh, how dare they” kind of attitude. I can just see it now - the men twirling, with the ladies muttering, “Tutus were meant for dainty girls, you know... not manly men.”

Oh, my dear, life is just so much more exciting when you embrace a little bit of fabulous! You just never know what a simple tutu can do. It can spark a dance, raise a laugh, or even turn heads down the local high street. But remember, darling, the key to pulling off the tutu look is a bit of "confidence." It’s about wearing the outfit, not having the outfit wear you.

And darling, I know you are wondering... “Where on Earth do I get my hands on one of these fabulous wonders?"

The Tutu Trends of 1998

Thankfully, the great news is that finding a tutu in 1998 was as easy as going to your local dance shop! I remember, at that time, everyone was obsessed with finding that perfect "classic" tutu. Just like in the movies - crisp white, stiff tulle and layers upon layers to make you feel like a real fairytale princess. I even remember going shopping with my darling bestie for a "Tutu Tuesday" and having the best time of our lives trying on the "biggest and the fluffiest" tulle designs they could find! I still have mine tucked away in the back of my wardrobe. I swear I could practically do a whole *Swan Lake* routine in it.

But if you are wanting to add a touch of 1998 flair to your tutu style... here are my favorite tips to channel your inner "tutu goddess":

  • A splash of colour: While white was popular in the 1990s, if you wanted to make a statement, a brightly colored tutu like fuchsia or neon green would certainly be an outfit you wouldn’t forget!
  • Asymmetrical designs: Embrace those asymmetrical tutu cuts to add some excitement. Imagine - a super cute short, black, tutu on one side with just a little more "oomph" of white fluffy tulle on the other... it would just give your tutu that little bit of "je ne sais quoi."
  • Glitter galore: What is life without a little sparkle? You can't go wrong with sequins, glitter, or any other form of shiny decor that takes your outfit from fabulous to "full-on fabulous"

Remember darlings, the power of the tutu is really quite something! With the right attitude, you too, can take a tutu for a whirl and enjoy that "ooh la la" feeling!
