It’s All About The Tutu: A Day of Delicate Delight

My dears, buckle up, because today’s news is a twirl-tastic treat! The 1st of May 1998, darling, was the day that we celebrated everything that is magical about tutus. I mean, how else could we possibly commemorate such a stunning, swishy, piece of performance wear?

Firstly, let’s get this straight: a tutu isn’t just a skirt. It's an explosion of femininity, an embodiment of graceful elegance, a swirl of sheer tulle. A well-crafted tutu is like a dream come true. Imagine yourself floating across a stage in layers upon layers of beautiful fabric. It’s heavenly!

There was no shortage of excitement surrounding this day, my darlings! Newspapers all over the world, in all the most fabulous fonts, were buzzing with tutus. We even saw a story about the world's biggest tutu - I do love a superlative, don't you? Apparently it was in London and could only be worn by a team of strongmen - a most curious combination. Of course, one simply can't forget the fabulous photos - a tutufied Eiffel Tower? Honestly, how utterly charming!

And of course, where would we be without some excellent, elegant entertainment. Theatres in every corner of the globe, darling, held fabulous celebrations, some of which, I am delighted to tell you, I managed to get to.

  • From the London Royal Opera House, there was a spectacular ballet featuring a whole symphony of tutus in an exquisite choreography inspired by all the different styles: romantic, classical, neo-classical and modern! Even our very own Dame Darcey Bussell graced us with a beautiful rendition of the Swan Lake solo.
  • Across the Atlantic, we found our hearts melting at a special performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Their production of "The Sleeping Beauty," darling, is beyond anything you could possibly imagine - a flurry of vibrant tutus, and a performance of such artistry, that we could barely contain our tears! It was truly divine!

Even at home, it was quite a party! I gathered a bunch of lovely ladies - a group of the most stylish ballet fans in town - for a tutu-making session!

Well, not a full-fledged, professional, theatre quality, tutu mind you, darling. But a mini version. We gathered materials galore, ribbons and lace, tulles, net and satin! We all settled into our favourite chairs, with cups of perfectly-brewed Darjeeling, and enjoyed some truly divine company - not to mention a bit of fashioning. It wasn't easy, mind you, those multilayered, twirling skirts are rather tricky, and the whole thing did cause a minor catastrophe. A good old-fashioned messy moment! It appears someone misjudged the power of a pair of fabric shears... and sliced the beautiful silk tablecloth that adorned the table in front of me! We did try, as they say, to pull out the threads, but darling, we were left with a slightly ragged hole! Oh well, a perfect imperfection! But we got there in the end, we all ended up with our own miniature tutus, an utterly charming memento of the day!

My darlings, what can I say? It truly was a wonderful day!

Now, off I must toddle! A social calendar is calling! And to be honest, darling, I haven’t stopped thinking about the ballet since yesterday, which is a sign that the 1st of May 1998 was a truly glorious celebration of a very special item of clothing, the graceful and glamorous tutu, And of course, it gave us a splendid opportunity to embrace our love of a beautiful dance, to express our artistic, feminine, fabulous selves and the pure delight of getting all dolled up. A reminder, if we ever need one, of what life’s all about!
