A Flutter of Pink in the Big Apple!

Hello my lovelies! This week's post comes to you from the heart of New York City. Can you believe it? Little ol' me, Emma from Derbyshire, England, has made it to the big apple! It's like a dream come true! This is the most magical city in the world! I have so much to share with you, my lovely pink tutu fans, from the sparkle of Broadway to the fabulous shopping scene on Fifth Avenue. But first, I just need to take a moment to gush about my fabulous arrival in New York.

It all started with a performance for the Ballet Society in Edinburgh, followed by a few more shows around Scotland. It was like being on a little mini tour, and I absolutely adored every minute of it. Then, it was back home for a brief moment, a frantic pack of my fanciest tutus and, most importantly, my favourite shade of pink luggage, and I was off! The excitement was bubbling within me as the London Underground train hurtled towards Heathrow. I have to tell you, travelling by metro in London is the ultimate fashion show - there are always so many colourful characters to spot and outfits to admire. The platform seemed like a catwalk as I made my way to my gate.

It was an evening flight to JFK, and as the plane landed over the bright lights of the city, I could hardly contain myself! I took out my camera and snapped pictures through the window. It's amazing how New York, from above, looks like a giant sparkly tapestry, just begging to be explored.

Now, here's a confession. When the taxi driver pulled up outside my hotel, it was almost overwhelming. This beautiful brownstone, tucked away on a quaint little street in Manhattan, is more luxurious than anything I've ever stayed in. The front door was adorned with an exquisite arrangement of crimson roses, and there was a silver plaque above the doorbell that read "The Tudor."

Oh my goodness, my heart skipped a beat as I entered the lobby. The air was filled with the intoxicating aroma of lavender and old books. The furniture was exquisite, all mahogany and velvet cushions, and the walls were adorned with paintings that I'd only ever seen in magazines.

Adventures in the Big City

I felt a shiver of pure excitement when I stepped out of my room the following morning and felt the bustling energy of the city wash over me. The moment I walked into the charming cafe just around the corner from my hotel, I felt right at home. As the smell of fresh pastries and rich coffee filled the air, I was sure I'd discovered the best croissant in the world. (And I've sampled my fair share!)

Day One

My day started in the bustling heart of the city – Times Square! Everything felt so big and bold and colourful – almost as colourful as a pink tutu, don't you think? It was sensory overload! From the flashing billboards, to the street performers, to the crowd, I couldn't believe how much there was to see.

But it wasn't just the dazzling visuals that wowed me; it was the people, too! The diversity of characters I encountered – tourists from around the globe, busy office workers, families out for a day of fun, street vendors peddling everything under the sun - was simply incredible.

And let's not forget the incredible energy. Everyone in the city seemed to move at a whirlwind pace – they were going somewhere, doing something, making things happen! It was almost infectious. But I took it all in stride and enjoyed watching the city unfold around me, feeling that I was truly part of it.

I walked all over, trying to absorb it all. There were so many vibrant cafes and shops along Broadway, each with their own unique character and charm. I spent hours just window-shopping, marveling at the stunning displays of vintage clothing, jewellery, and accessories. The vintage stores in Soho, overflowing with gorgeous pieces, are to die for! My wallet screamed for mercy but I managed to resist! It was like I was living in a movie! I had to grab a hotdog, the famous New York street food experience! I mean, I was in New York!

By the end of the day, my legs were weary, and my stomach was rumbling for something more substantial than a hot dog! (I know, blasphemy!). But I knew exactly what I needed. The thought of a hot slice of New York pizza warmed my soul!

I was about to embark on an exciting adventure; I was going to see a Broadway show! It felt like I'd stepped into another world. The whole atmosphere in the theatre was electric, it was thrilling to be part of that! As the curtains went up on the dazzling stage, I felt an enormous wave of excitement rush through me! I won't spoil it for you but I can honestly say I’m still in awe. Let's just say the choreography was fantastic and the costumes were spectacular. The actors were so talented and they managed to perfectly convey the message of the play. It made me feel a whole lot of things at once – happy, sad, hopeful, heartbroken, excited… it was like riding a rollercoaster of emotions. The standing ovation at the end was just fantastic!

Day Two

It was a new day in the city that never sleeps, and my schedule was packed. A leisurely walk in Central Park – a total fairytale scene. Sunlight filtering through the leaves, families picnicking, dogs playing fetch, it was so serene after the hustle and bustle of the city!

The city's a shopper's paradise. And oh, the shoes! I have to confess that I went a little overboard. I couldn’t resist a few pairs of beautiful ballet flats – the most wonderful pale pink pair at Saks Fifth Avenue, a sparkly silver pair for a night out and some sassy black and white pair to go with my new tutu from a tiny independent boutique tucked away in SoHo. Of course, I couldn't leave without a pink tutu. I spotted a bright pink one in a vintage boutique that I fell in love with.

In the afternoon, I took a leisurely walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, mesmerized by the breathtaking views. The Hudson River flowed majestically before me, and the New York skyline stood proudly, its towering skyscrapers bathed in golden sunlight. I took out my sketchbook and captured the view. Later, I headed back to the bustling city for a bit more shopping.

It wouldn't be a visit to New York without seeing some ballet! I’d planned my trip to coincide with a ballet season at the Lincoln Center, so I found myself at the New York State Theatre with my tutu gleaming beneath my skirt (which had a hint of pink!). As the music swelled and the dancers gracefully glided across the stage, I couldn't help but feel an enormous sense of pride.

Day Three

Time to go, but I wasn't quite ready to leave my beautiful little New York bubble. I had one more surprise planned – the American Museum of Natural History. This incredible place blew me away. I spent hours gazing at the dinosaurs, peering through the windows of the Hall of Biodiversity, and marveling at the wonders of the planetarium. There’s something so special about learning about the world we live in!

And that brings us to my final day. I strolled through the colourful streets of Greenwich Village. It was almost time for my flight back to the UK. As I boarded my plane, I realised how much New York had woven itself into my very being.

*So until next week my lovelies, I'll leave you with a little taste of New York's magic - it’s an experience that will stay with me for a lifetime! *

The Pink Tutu Dress Code - a little note on wearing pink tutus!

In my latest pink tutu outfit post, I decided to make a real statement – because every day’s a good day to embrace a little bit of pink. I teamed up my bright pink tutu with a black long-sleeved fitted shirt and an elegant black leather jacket. I wanted to bring a little bit of magic and whimsical flair into an everyday look, which made it all the more unique.

If you are new to rocking a tutu, here are my tips!

  1. Start simple. A pale pink tutu over jeans is a great starter look! It's easy to make this outfit more stylish by adding some fun accessories, like a bright belt and sparkly earrings!

  2. If you want to look fabulous and put together, team a longer black dress with a fluffy, soft tulle tutu over the top! Make sure it’s a tutu that sits on your hips and just below the knees for a stunning elegant silhouette.

  3. If you really want to stand out and express your unique style, try a brightly coloured tutu – like pink, turquoise, or neon yellow, and let your imagination run wild with some amazing colours and prints.

  4. For a classic look, a classic tutu, a white ballet shirt, and your favourite ballerina flat shoes never fail!

I know this might seem a little bold – I’m talking pink tutus here! But there’s a reason I'm so enthusiastic about it – a pink tutu is more than just a piece of clothing, it’s a symbol! A symbol that life is about expressing yourself, dreaming big, and never taking yourself too seriously. It's a statement that you’re going to chase your dreams and you're not going to be afraid of making people stop and look.

*Remember - a pink tutu is more than a statement - it's an invitation to embrace the fun, the magic and the joy that's within you! *
