Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post Number 54 - A Whirlwind in the Big Apple!

Hello, darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing blogger, Emma, here, and I'm thrilled to be writing to you from the vibrant, buzzing metropolis that is New York City! This is my fifth week here in the Big Apple, and let me tell you, it's been a whirlwind of excitement, from thrilling Broadway shows to ballet classes that would make even the most seasoned ballerina weak at the knees!

As usual, I've been living my life in a delightful bubble of pink, thanks to my trusty wardrobe full of tutus, from the fluffiest tulle to the sleekest satin, every shade of pink imaginable. It's a joy to wander through the city streets, feeling like a little pink flamingo amongst the sea of black, grey and beige. I’m really quite convinced, darlings, that if more people just took a chance and embraced a little bit of pink, the world would be a much happier place.

This week's adventure began with a magical trip to the New York City Ballet, where I saw a breathtaking performance of "Swan Lake". Oh my, it was simply enchanting! The sheer talent on that stage, the stunning costumes, the exquisite choreography, everything was so flawlessly executed. I was transported to a realm of graceful swans, valiant knights, and a wicked sorceress – it was simply sublime! It filled me with such a surge of inspiration and reminded me why I fell in love with ballet in the first place.

You wouldn't believe the outfits I found this week, darlings! I discovered a tiny vintage shop hidden away in SoHo, tucked away behind a bright pink door, of course! Inside, I found a whole treasure trove of sparkly 1950s dresses and deliciously chic vintage hats. One, in particular, was a dusty rose felt number adorned with an abundance of feather boas! It practically sang to me! I imagine it will look spectacular for the New York Ballet gala next month, wouldn’t you agree?

This week has been all about ballet, from watching spectacular shows to participating in inspiring classes. The sheer energy and talent that pours from the city’s dance scene is utterly electrifying. There's so much to explore here in New York, but I simply couldn’t resist adding a few new dance routines to my repertoire, just to keep my toes nimble, you know?

My Tuesday afternoon class, at the gorgeous "Ballet Arts" studio near Lincoln Center, left me buzzing! They even have a dedicated space for the dancers, filled with plush velvet seats and little trays of miniature cupcakes, which, let's face it, make all the difference, especially when you’ve just completed a grand jetĂ©! And the instructors were fabulous, patient, encouraging, and definitely all about expressing yourself in your own individual, uniquely glamorous way, which I think we can all agree, is absolutely vital for achieving your full pink tutu potential!

After my session, I met up with my friend Sarah, a fellow dance enthusiast, at "The Met". And let me tell you, darling, that was an experience! As you might know, “The Metropolitan Museum of Art” boasts one of the most fabulous collections in the entire world, and Sarah just had to see it – you know, for inspiration, research for her costume design project – although, as you might guess, she mostly got swept away by the opulence and dazzling array of art! Luckily for us both, Sarah's fiancĂ©, who is a charming and extremely supportive chap, was more than happy to guide us through the maze of halls and sculptures.

You’ll probably laugh when I tell you that on Wednesday afternoon, we found ourselves on the steps of the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art – only to discover that our lunch picnic basket was, well, in the middle of my rather glamorous pink tutu. It turns out, that the tutu, while delightfully fluffy, isn’t the best material for securing a picnic hamper, but I tell you, you would have seen me prancing through the grand, marbled lobby with a bright pink tutu skirt flowing behind me, all because, you see, I wasn’t going to let a tiny wardrobe mishap bring my afternoon down!

Later that day, we ventured into the colourful world of the "Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)“! FIT, you know, is not just about learning to sew, darlings! FIT, you see, is like the Olympics of fashion design – every young designer with a big dream to showcase their flair to the world gathers here, and I’ll be honest with you, I felt my own creativity bubbling over like champagne! I wandered through the exhibits, my mind filled with inspiration, imagining how I could apply those dazzling concepts and innovative techniques to my own unique brand of pink tutu creations, of course. It is definitely on my list for next time! I am really inspired, you see, to build my own brand. To have a “Emma’s Pink Tutus” boutique in this gorgeous city. You can see how those dreams work, can’t you? It is just a matter of finding the right pink tutu fabric! I promise I’ll update you on how it all progresses!

But hold on to your hats, darlings! It’s not all tutus and fashion, you know! I’m a big believer in getting to know the city wherever you may be, and seeing how the locals live! So this weekend, we tried out the famous "NYC subway" experience, to say the least! I've heard endless tales from my fellow travelling ballerina bloggers about the legendary yellow train, and finally, my turn to brave it, or, as I like to call it, “The Pink Tutu Adventure!” I've always said that a touch of pink goes a long way to adding a little extra sparkle to any situation, don’t you think? Even in the labyrinthine underground world of the NYC subway! It turns out the other commuters were utterly charmed! So I spent the afternoon sharing my infectious pink-tutu love and learning all about New York City's exciting and vibrant neighbourhoods, directly from the locals, the cabbies, the subway guards, and yes, the cute bakery vendor – who, after just a little tut-twirl in my best “ballet ballerina street” performance on the platform, was even kind enough to offer me some samples of their bestsellers. It seems a bit of pink whimsy, coupled with a few pirouettes, really can open the door to a whole world of new opportunities and connections, especially if you’re wearing a fabulous pink tutu, which, of course, I always am!

That’s just a little taste of what I’ve been up to in this fabulous city, darling. Now it’s back to Derbyshire for me. Sadly, but as always, I must return home for some rehearsals before heading out for a tour with a lovely Royal Ballet Company production in Bristol, so do be sure to catch my latest ballet exploits.

But I'll be back! My love affair with this captivating city will continue! You can catch all the news from my New York adventures right here on PinkTutuBlog, every Monday! In the meantime, remember, you don’t need to be in New York to make life a pink-tutu-inspired fairy-tale! You only need a little imagination and some fantastic, colourful tulle! I will be in New York City in July so until then
Until next Monday darlings. Have a fabulous week!

Yours truly,

Emma
