Pink Tutu Blog: New York City - Post #215

Monday 19th July 1999

Dearest Tutu Tribe,

It's Monday, which means it's time for a fresh batch of NYC magic right here on www.pink-tutu.com! I’m Emma, your resident pink tutu aficionado and champion of all things sparkly and twirly, and this week, we’re taking a trip through the bustling streets of New York City!

This time last week, I was twirling my way through the cobbled streets of Derbyshire, but now, I'm practically vibrating with the sheer energy of the Big Apple. There’s a reason this city never sleeps, folks. You can literally feel the buzz in your bones. I'm here to see the amazing Moulin Rouge ballet production at the Metropolitan Opera, but before we get to all the fabulous stagecraft and costumes, I want to tell you about my adventures.

Arriving in Style: The Tutu Travels

Now, any proper trip to New York City needs to start in style. So, naturally, I arrived at JFK Airport in full ballerina regalia – think a glorious, blush pink tulle tutu with shimmering sequins, paired with my trusty black ballet flats and a chic pink silk scarf. Yes, I know, the subway might not be the most obvious place to wear a tutu, but it’s my signature style, and who’s to say the passengers weren't a bit inspired by my vibrant outfit? (Plus, who doesn’t love a little whimsy in their daily routine?)

The ride through the tunnels on the 7 train was pretty incredible, filled with diverse personalities, vibrant city views and an atmosphere that simply hummed with possibility. I spotted a teenager wearing a beautiful handmade crocheted dress on the platform and a group of people chatting in Spanish on the train. This is the magic of New York City - you never know what amazing new sights and stories you might encounter around every corner!

A City Built For Fashion

The second I stepped out of the station and onto the famous pavement of Times Square, I was dazzled by the sheer volume of colours and fashion! New York is truly a fashion capital and there’s so much style inspiration to be found on every corner, from the high-end fashion houses on Fifth Avenue to the eclectic vintage boutiques tucked away in little hidden alleyways. I found myself drawn to a vintage shop on Bleecker Street that boasted a dazzling collection of dresses, shoes and handbags from the 50s and 60s.

My personal mission: finding a perfectly pink dress that embodies the New York spirit and complements my upcoming performance. It has to be vintage and glamorous, like a true Hollywood star, but with a playful, modern touch. Oh, the possibilities!

Discovering Hidden Gems

Let me tell you, wandering through the streets of New York City is a sensory delight. I loved stopping in little Italian cafes for strong cappuccinos and delicious slices of pizza, getting lost in the vibrant, fragrant atmosphere of the bustling farmers markets on every corner, and being captivated by the live music emanating from cozy, little jazz bars tucked away in alleyways. This city is truly an enchanting mosaic of experiences.

For this trip, I'm determined to seek out hidden treasures. One day, I stumbled upon a delightful art exhibition in a small gallery in Greenwich Village. It showcased paintings by emerging artists with a strong focus on social commentary. The colours were bright and bold, just like New York itself.

The Magic of Dance

Of course, the highlight of this trip had to be attending the Moulin Rouge ballet performance. I snagged a ticket for tonight, so I'll save the full details for next week's blog. Let me just say it’s something to truly inspire every dancer, ballet or not!

I’m in my dressing room right now, getting ready for tonight's performance at the New York Dance Theatre. It's going to be amazing! It’s been such a full and fabulous day, and it wouldn’t be complete without the ultimate pink tutu twist: I found the perfect dress!

Imagine a silky, pale pink cocktail dress, the kind a glamorous movie star might wear to an exclusive premiere, with an elegant flowing skirt and a flattering cinched-in waist. I just know I'm going to make the dress my own by pairing it with my favourite tulle tutu and shimmering accessories. And you bet, I'll be posting a picture of this masterpiece next week!

This weekend is already jam-packed. Saturday night I have a ballroom dance performance at the Empire Hotel in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Can you even believe the name?

And the weekend isn’t over! Sunday’s an "American Ballet Theatre Open Day" at the Lincoln Center! I’ll be exploring all things ballet, and if I'm lucky, even a performance by an extraordinary, award-winning ballerina! It's always amazing to see professionals dance and be inspired!

Pink Tutu Power!

Stay tuned for all the glitz, glam and tutu-tastic adventures coming next week, folks! And remember, never underestimate the power of a pink tutu, even on the busy streets of New York City. Because a touch of pink can add magic to any outfit, any journey, and any moment.

Keep twirling, Emma
