Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post #241 – Dancing Dreams in the Big Apple!

Hello darlings!

It's Monday, and you know what that means – time for another adventure from yours truly, Emma, your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina!

This week, I'm bringing you sunshine straight from the streets of New York City! I know, I know, you're probably thinking "Emma, you just left the bright lights of the West End in London!" But I simply couldn't resist the allure of this vibrant metropolis. I had to experience it all - from the soaring skyscrapers to the delicious cheesecake – and of course, the phenomenal dance scene!

Before I take you on my New York City whirlwind, let me quickly tell you about last week's amazing time in London. As I mentioned last Monday, I performed at the Royal Albert Hall. Honestly, I felt like a proper ballerina with the amazing lighting and huge audience! We were performing Giselle which is a favourite of mine and I danced the role of Myrtha. Afterwards, I had to do several curtain calls. That feeling of the whole crowd cheering and the applause roaring around you... bliss!

And you know, I got such fantastic feedback on my pink tutu outfit, which really stood out against the black stage backdrop. It really felt like it belonged on the world's most famous stage! People were snapping photos as I was taking my bows - so exciting!

The real icing on the cake? My friend Amelia came from Derbyshire to see the performance! She’s actually been such an amazing supporter of my pink tutu quest, always sending me inspirational quotes about self-expression and following your dreams. She also just launched her own pottery studio and told me she has been incorporating little pink touches into all of her creations. Such a sweetheart!

But let's get back to New York City!

Big Apple, Big Dreams

Landing in New York was like stepping into a vibrant dreamscape! My journey started at the John F Kennedy International Airport, which, despite its size, seemed to hum with a buzzing energy. As soon as I landed, I was drawn to this incredible city’s infectious optimism.

You'll never guess what? My flight was delayed a bit, but I made a friend – another tutu-lover! She told me she was a part of the local dance scene here and said I simply had to try out a ballet class at the American Ballet Theatre. What an opportunity!

But first, I had to find my digs for the week. I was lucky enough to find a little flat in Greenwich Village - just a stone's throw from all the iconic sights and even closer to the heart of New York City’s thriving arts scene! You just know this city was made for ballet lovers like me!

My first morning in New York was like something out of a movie. Stepping out of my apartment onto the charming streets of Greenwich Village, the aroma of fresh coffee filled the air, mingled with the sound of chatter from locals enjoying their morning. I had to, of course, start the day with a quintessential New York City experience: a delicious bagel with a schmear of cream cheese. And yes, it was absolutely heavenly!

The whole neighbourhood had such a laid-back, artistic vibe that made me feel right at home. I spotted a local boutique full of stylish accessories, and of course, had to pop in. They even had a few pink items that felt perfect for a Parisian-inspired tutu ensemble, and I immediately picked out a few items – my own pink version of ‘Carrie Bradshaw chic!’

But as I've already said, the highlight of my day was my first American Ballet Theatre class!

Barre to Bliss:

Now, the studios in New York have this unique charm, they are much bigger than what I’m used to, but have a sense of tradition and history! It was wonderful. Everyone was incredibly friendly, and we started with a lovely warm up which was focused on flexibility and core work – my favourite! It really helped to prepare for all the grand allegro which is an amazing, jumping section!

The teacher was inspiring, with a style so focused on precision, which gave me this beautiful feeling of being on point. But what was most moving, was seeing such a diverse mix of students in class! From little ones in pink tutus just starting out to seasoned dancers honing their skills, it showed me the amazing universality of ballet.

We worked through a combination sequence that really made my legs and back burn in the most beautiful way, but I also really felt a connection with the music. Everyone in the class really enjoyed themselves! We finished with a final stretch and the whole experience was incredible. I'm absolutely going back for more!

Stepping into the Spotlight:

After my inspiring dance class, I took a leisurely stroll to Times Square. That electric atmosphere with its flashing billboards and bustling energy was exhilarating! It really gave me that New York City rush, I just wanted to be in the middle of it all. But, let’s be honest, wearing a pink tutu in a bustling city like Times Square, can be quite an experience!

A Taste of the Theatre:

Later that day, I ventured to see a matinee performance of "Moulin Rouge! The Musical." The production was just breathtaking! It had everything: an amazing cast, fantastic music, dazzling costumes and an unbelievable stage setup. The whole atmosphere was filled with energy. I've always been fascinated by the music and stories from the Belle Epoque and this really captured its charm in a magical way.

My highlight? It's hard to choose! Maybe it was the energy of the whole musical, the amazing way they were singing and dancing - it's the stuff of dreams! And then there were the costumes... Absolutely gorgeous.

Of course, my inner fashionista couldn’t resist visiting the local department stores, which was an absolute delight! I fell in love with a fabulous pastel-pink satin blouse with delicate embroidery, I felt like a modern-day flapper, which seemed perfect for the era! I immediately bought it – what a lovely memento of my trip.

I just loved the atmosphere of those huge department stores – you never know what you’re going to find in a bustling city like New York City. You just have to step inside and find your own gems!

Manhattan Dreams:

To be honest, the biggest surprise was exploring Central Park! With its lush greenery, charming lakes, and graceful bridges, it felt like an oasis of tranquility amidst the city's frenetic pace. You really can have a little piece of nature right in the middle of Manhattan – it was magical!

You know, the weather's been amazing during my trip so I was able to soak up the sun while sitting by the lake with my bagel (I really do love a good bagel!) It felt really therapeutic after the day’s activities. And yes, I even managed to capture a few photos in my pink tutu for a special New York-inspired post for Instagram!

Pink Tutu Travels:

It’s no surprise, but exploring New York by subway was quite a highlight of my trip! Imagine the sights, sounds and smells of a truly iconic American metropolis - that’s what you get on a busy subway ride.

Yes, it was definitely an interesting experience – it’s really all about observing. The best thing was how easily you can pop in and out of different neighbourhoods, which made it so easy to hop around and see everything this great city has to offer.

I also wanted to see how everyone dressed in this wonderful city! My personal favourite? This chic girl dressed in head-to-toe pink. Her outfit felt so vibrant and energetic, a really great reminder that you should never be afraid to embrace bold colours and to show your individuality! Maybe I’ll copy her look next time I’m back in the big apple.

Of course, it’s also quite amazing just watching all the people who commute to work each morning. You get so much inspiration just seeing how they create their unique styles - it’s like a living runway show.

Time for Goodbye… Until Next Time

But my New York adventures couldn’t go on forever, much as I wished they could. So, I reluctantly packed my bags. It’s always bittersweet when it’s time to say goodbye. It seems that the best things come to an end just when you are having the most fun! But that just makes it even more exciting when I’m planning my next trip.

New York City will forever hold a special place in my heart. Its energy, its creativity, its amazing fashion sense, and its incredible ballet scene have left a lasting impression on me. This week's trip has filled my spirit with inspiration, and you just know I'll be back soon.

Of course, one thing’s for sure – I’m going to be sporting a pink tutu wherever I go!

I know I’ve said this a lot before, but pink is my favourite colour. It always fills my days with joy, just like it did for me this week! I love pink!

And of course, my dream? To encourage you all to put on a pink tutu and feel like you can truly express your inner joy, dance your heart out and be as dazzling and stylish as you want to be!

Because everyone can be a pink tutu ballerina!

Emma out!

Don't forget to join me next Monday, when I'll be sharing more pink tutu-filled adventures. Until then, dance your heart out!

**Pink hugs,

Emma**

P.S. Did you know today's date marks the beginning of "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day," a US holiday celebrating the life and legacy of the iconic civil rights leader? This date holds significance for both civil rights and social justice. Let's reflect on his powerful message of equality and peace!
