Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post 276 - Monday, 18th September 2000: New York, New York, It’s a Wonderful Town!

Hello my dearest tutu-loving friends! It’s Emma here, writing to you from the vibrant heart of New York City, and my goodness, you won’t believe what an adventure I’ve had! I swear, I’m living out every pink-hued dream here in the Big Apple!

So, as you know, I'm a firm believer that a little bit of pink tulle can brighten up any day, and what better place to showcase this than in the bustling streets of NYC? This week, I took a plunge into the heart of New York's theatre district. Now, I’m no stranger to a bit of a performance - after all, a girl in a tutu has to be dramatic, right? – but being here in this iconic hub is truly breathtaking.

The minute I stepped off the metro – oh, the metro! A world of its own, just bursting with energy! I have a thing for underground journeys, so much to see and overhear – and hopped out into the neon-bright light, I was mesmerised. My senses went into overdrive, overwhelmed with the smells of popcorn and hotdogs, the cacophony of city noises, and, oh, the sheer beauty of the vintage marquees above the theatres! It was pure magic!

Of course, my mission as a dedicated pink-tutu advocate meant I had to add some sparkle to the streets. My hot pink tulle creation, a playful little number with silver sequin trim, turned heads as I walked down Broadway, just soaking in the atmosphere. I mean, come on, who can resist a pink tutu prancing down the heart of the theatre district?

Then it was time for the main event! My heart thumped with excitement as I made my way towards the legendary Radio City Music Hall. I had tickets for the legendary Rockettes' Christmas Spectacular, and let me tell you, my heart fluttered with joy from the minute I saw the glittering façade. My expectations were blown away by the pure scale of the building, a grand palace for all things entertaining. I just knew this was going to be a spectacular performance!

Now, I know I’ve gushed about ballet shows and street performances on this blog before, but let me tell you, the sheer energy of a Broadway show, the glamour, the music, the costuming, it was an assault on my senses in the best way possible! The Rockettes' synchronicity and precision was mesmerizing. The dazzling costumes and the set changes made the whole thing a breathtaking visual spectacle. My little pink tutu, much to my chagrin, did not fit in at all, although it was a fabulous reminder of who I am!

I mean, it’s all well and good wearing a pink tutu and going for a jog in Derbyshire, England, where my friends find it endearingly odd, but this, this was a whole new level of daring. There was just something magical about the experience, seeing that much talent and passion in one place, and realising that New York truly lives up to its reputation. It’s a melting pot of artistry, dreams, and sheer ambition.

Afterwards, I treated myself to some of those iconic New York city cupcakes. Oh my, those frosting swirls and pastel hues – they matched my outfit perfectly! You see, it’s all about matching your aesthetic, and pink frosting and pink tutus are simply made for each other!

But the real magic was still to come. You know how I love browsing those cute independent stores with vintage dresses, shoes, and accessories? Well, let’s just say that New York is a treasure trove of all things fashion. After a late dinner – delicious lobster mac & cheese, and let’s be real, the pasta was definitely pink-tinted for me, but I didn't ask – I went shopping in Soho. And what do you know, I found a little gem tucked away on a backstreet - the cutest little shop full of the most dazzling vintage tutus imaginable. Of course, I couldn’t resist indulging in a little retail therapy. I walked out with a pale lavender vintage number, perfect for adding a touch of romanticism to my NYC adventures. It'll look divine with my bright pink ballerina shoes and a blush-colored bag.

Of course, my pink tutu had a big part to play in my fashion adventures. I wore it the next day to one of the most exciting things on the New York calendar – Fashion Week. It wasn’t a choreographed dance for once. That’s a little bit of me you’ll never know – the ballet training is all to help me move about a little faster!

But yes, Fashion Week, my dear friends! The city just buzzes with energy as designers and celebrities show off the latest collections. I snagged a spot outside a couple of shows, feeling very much in my element amongst all those stylish New Yorkers. Let’s be honest, the energy, the bright colors, and the whole scene was made for a girl who loves pink tutus! It felt like my kind of party! And hey, if more people saw pink tutus strutting around the fashion capital of the world, maybe it would make some big statement about how fashion can be playful and joyous.

One day, the world will be in a pink tutu. And trust me, the world will be a more fabulous place for it.

Of course, my New York adventure wasn’t all glamour and glitz. I squeezed in a little bit of quiet time, exploring Central Park. Oh, Central Park, where did I go all those years without you in my life! It was the perfect escape from the bustling city life, and let me tell you, it really added to my city diary – the autumn colours, the rustling leaves – magical. I even tried to find a quiet spot for a ballet practice, just a bit of pliéing and a touch of graceful révérence in this iconic spot. My heart nearly exploded when a young girl came up to me asking if she could watch. That’s all it takes – sharing my passion with others, bringing joy and grace to everyone I meet – just another little dream I have in my pink-tinted head.

I love getting out on those subway lines too, not so much the smell and all those passengers in one confined space, but seeing the city open up at each station! I just felt so connected to the whole place, like I was part of its unique rhythm. This truly is the most fascinating place to visit. New York truly knows how to bring out my inner ballerina and fashionista in a way that only a pink-tutu-loving girl like me could dream of.

Stay tuned for more pink-tinted adventures from NYC next Monday, where I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the best cupcake spots in town – because a little bit of sugar is just what you need after a day filled with ballet, Broadway, and, of course, a touch of pink!

Until then, remember to embrace your inner ballerina, wear your pink tutus with pride, and make sure to spread joy and beauty wherever you go!

Love, Emma (xo)
