Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post #413 - New York, New York, It's a Wonderful Town!

Monday, 5th May, 2003

Hello darlings! It's Monday, which means it's time for another Pink Tutu Blog post from yours truly, Emma, right here in the fabulous city that never sleeps, New York! Oh, how I adore this city. It's like a never-ending candy shop for a ballerina like me, filled with tutus and tiaras and the promise of breathtaking performances. And let's not forget the shopping - oh my goodness, the shopping!

This week's been a whirl, a flurry of sequins, silk, and shoes! I've been pirouetting through the city, embracing every delicious moment of my stay. And as always, I'm thrilled to be sharing my experiences with you all, my fellow pink tutu enthusiasts!

The Met & The Madness

The Met Opera has been calling my name this week. Imagine, The Barber of Seville by Rossini - pure opera bliss! It was an unforgettable evening, complete with a glittering gown that wouldn't be out of place on a Broadway stage, and my trusty, always-reliable, pink tutu. There's nothing quite like the feeling of twirling amidst the grandeur of the Metropolitan Opera House, feeling the music pulse through me and my shimmering tutu.

Speaking of music, did you know that today marks the 125th anniversary of the first public performance of "The Nutcracker" in St. Petersburg, Russia? Imagine a little girl named Clara dreaming of sugar plums in the grand Tsarskoye Selo theatre! What a wonderful reminder that the magic of ballet has always enchanted and thrilled us, from the Tsarina's court to the grand stages of the world.

Tutu Travels on the Subway

My favourite mode of transport in this concrete jungle? The subway, of course! It's like a living ballet itself. Think about it: the rhythmical rumble of the train, the flashes of light as you whisk through tunnels, the constant motion of people - it's almost choreographed! And then there's the spectacle of the passengers: I've seen more styles, outfits, and colours on the subway than I have in the catwalks of Milan! But my favourite view is of course, the reflection of myself, all pink tutu-fied, on the polished steel doors. It always makes me giggle - such a little burst of whimsy on an otherwise everyday commute.

Shop, Shop, Shop!

Who am I kidding? Shopping in New York is a passion, an obsession! You know how I love my little pink tutu-worthy goodies! I've been on a whirlwind tour of designer boutiques this week - think Alexander McQueen, Valentino, and Chanel, but let's not forget those quaint vintage shops, stuffed to the brim with retro finds, begging to be repurposed. Itā€™s not all about luxury and big names, it's about the joy of finding that perfect item that just makes your heart sing - and gives you a fantastic fashion foundation for a new ballet-inspired look!

I have discovered some absolute gems! The first is a vintage, hand-knitted sweater that would look positively stunning with my favourite pink tutu. I can picture it now, paired with a pair of classic black ballet flats and a stylish pink beret. Imagine the chicest little ensemble! Then thereā€™s a bejeweled butterfly pin, the kind you'd see a prima ballerina wear on stage - just perfect for adding that touch of magic and sparkle to any outfit.

A Day of Dancing

Of course, no trip to New York is complete without a ballet class or two! Itā€™s almost a religious experience for me, you know. To stretch and flow, feeling the warmth of the studio on my skin, the feeling of my tutu swishing and twirling around me. Oh, I wouldnā€™t have it any other way.

This week I've been at the American Ballet Theatre. The energy in the studio is palpable, electric even! These talented dancers push their bodies to the absolute limit. I learned so much watching them, feeling their passion radiate, just by observing. You could almost feel the music pulsing through the very air of the studio, and the instructors were such inspirations - they are real pros.

The World is Our Stage

One of the great joys of my journey is meeting like-minded souls - the fellow tutuwearers! I recently had a delightful conversation with a fellow ballerina, Clara, who I met while admiring a window display at Tiffany & Co. She was also from Derbyshire! Fancy that. She told me the most incredible story about a small ballet studio back home, how it brought so much joy to her and her friends growing up. And you know what? It was her story that truly inspired me to start this whole Pink Tutu blog! I just knew that there were other ballerinas out there, like us, living our dreams and rocking those pink tutus!

Clara also told me that sheā€™s planning on joining a contemporary dance workshop - she says it's so liberating to just move to the music! And itā€™s moments like these that remind me of the real magic of dance ā€“ itā€™s more than just a form of expression, itā€™s a way of life.

Coming up...

As you all know, Iā€™m always on the lookout for fabulous fashion events, especially those with a ballet-inspired touch. So guess what? This week is ā€œDance-Off Nightā€ at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts! And you just know I'll be there, pink tutu in tow!

I'm also dying to try out the ā€œpink-tasticā€ pastries and cupcakes that my fellow blogger Sarah has been raving about, so keep your eyes peeled for that delicious, pink-tinted treat post later this week.

So stay tuned, dear readers! Until next Monday, keep twirling, stay inspired, and most importantly, never stop dreaming of a pink-tutu-filled world!

With love and twirls, Emma

P.S. I just wanted to give a special shout-out to all you pink tutu-loving ladies out there. You inspire me every day! Keep on shining!
