Pink Tutu Blog NYC - #416 - Monday 2003-05-26 - She Danced in New York City

Hello darlings! It's Monday, so you know what that means! Time for a new post from your favourite pink tutu wearing, ballet-mad, fashionista, travelling around New York City! This week has been truly spectacular, and Iā€™m going to tell you all about it, but firstā€¦ a quick cup of tea and a delicious homemade cake, it wouldn't be Monday without it. Letā€™s dive in!

As usual, Iā€™m bursting with excitement to share all the fab happenings in my life this past week, and as always, it's all centred around the magical world of dance, fashion, and of course, New York City!

Pink Tutu New York City Diaries: The Big Apple Ballet Week

I arrived in New York on Wednesday morning after a fabulous overnight flight, I don't mind overnight flights when I'm getting a much-needed dose of New York city. This trip I felt my passion for dance simmering and my excitement bubbled up, even more, because I had tickets to see the ā€œSleeping Beautyā€ at Lincoln Centre. And let me tell you, darlings, it was breathtaking! The costumes were spectacular, the music, oh the music! It made me want to pirouette down Fifth Avenue! It was absolutely enchanting, a dream come true. Oh, how I long for that grace and elegance!

A Fashion Fantasy

The dress I wore was pretty fab too. My pink tulle ballerina dress (pink is my signature colour after all, itā€™s such a feminine colour don't you think, ) I wore it with black ballet pumps and a silver sequined headband. It was my tribute to all the wonderful women who work so hard and achieve so much in the world of dance! I couldn't resist snapping a photo in front of Lincoln Centre to document my ballet-licious experience. The iconic building was just as dazzling as the performance!

Of course, no trip to New York would be complete without some serious shopping! On Friday, I went into Manhattan to scour for the most divine accessories and shoes to add to my collection. The city was buzzing with energy, and everyone was dressed up to the nines!

The fashionistas at Saks Fifth Avenue never cease to amaze me with their extravagant and sophisticated designs, though for my money the little boutiques on Fifth Avenue are much more up my street! The best shops were the small, independent ones, crammed with vintage treasures. There, I snagged a beautiful, pastel blue silk scarf, perfect for when Iā€™m dancing around, or perhaps simply wandering about, in a hot New York summer! I even spotted the cutest pink beret. Canā€™t you see it already? Perfect for my next ballerina photo opportunity! Oh! It would be fab in front of Central Park!

Backstage Adventures

Speaking of ballet! On Saturday morning, I went to a masterclass in classical ballet with a teacher who had danced professionally at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, my stomping ground! I mean who am I kidding, even for my standard Iā€™m terrible! It's a struggle to make my toes even point the right way let alone balance in my pink tutus! Still, we all must keep striving, thatā€™s what my Mum would say, and even when I trip and fall, itā€™s such fun. At least I look glamorous when I fall!

In the afternoon I finally got to take a backstage tour of the Metropolitan Opera. It was everything I dreamed of and more! All those iconic figures dancing about, the costumes! The makeup! The energy was simply electrifying.

Itā€™s so inspiring to see talented individuals giving everything they have to performing on stage. Their passion is infectious! It was one of the most rewarding experiences. I learnt all about the production process, and I was so impressed by the artistry and skill that goes into bringing these incredible performances to life. I want to do it again, oh, I do!

After my amazing day, the sun was beginning to set and I spent a magical hour watching the sunset over Central Park. As I sat down on a bench, the beautiful colours reflecting off the buildings reminded me of those glorious hues used in the ballet ā€œSwan Lakeā€. It felt almost poetic and I was ready for another delicious plate of Italian from one of New Yorkā€™s favourite trattorias, before I drifted off to bed in a blissful exhaustion.

Back To the Real World

Back in London on Sunday I popped to the ballet store to see what had landed on their shelves and I finally managed to find a perfect pair of white pointe shoes that fit just right! And theyā€™re all pink (because well I like pink)! So I thought that maybe it was a sign to actually try a proper class! There was a ā€œbeginners pointe workā€ class and I figured maybe I could give it a go? I'm feeling very motivated these days, I think the trip to New York was just the injection I needed. Maybe a pink tutu ballet performance might even be possible!

As for the rest of this week, I've got another dance masterclass to keep up my practice! But before then, I've been looking at tickets to see whatā€™s playing at The Royal Opera House, itā€™s the best in the world darling, there really is nowhere better, and of course, I'm already working on my wardrobe for that performance.

And of course, the most important part of my week? You darlings reading my blog. Your continued support really means so much. Remember to send all your questions, ideas, and fashion tips to the ā€œPink Tutu Blogā€ email! See you next week, darlings, until then happy dancing and enjoy your week.

What I did on 2003-05-26

(This part is in my secret diary. Please be kind to my thoughts)

  1. Took the tube into Covent Garden - the new Ballet shoe collection was arriving so I couldnā€™t wait.

  2. Tried out the pointe shoes at the Ballet shop. This new pair might be the best ones I have, though maybe I need a dance lesson for those new shoes!

  3. Practiced a bit of my ballet routine, and even tried a couple of pirouettes, maybe I should just try the class - though the thought of being among other real ballet dancers does make me nervousā€¦ still, you only live once, right! And we canā€™t be afraid to push ourselves out of our comfort zone, especially if we want to be the best version of ourselves! Thatā€™s the key thing, the best version of ourselves.

  4. Spent ages looking at the London shows for this year. Iā€™m really enjoying going to see more classical ballet this year - my real aim is to be back on stage one day, itā€™s not even a ā€œdreamā€ itā€™s a desire. It's time to stop talking about it and get it done, because everyone has a pink tutu story! And I must keep spreading the messageā€¦ I will do that one day!
