Pink Tutu Blog NYC - Monday 2005-06-20: Dancing in the Big Apple!

Helloooo, my darling Tutu-lovers!

It's Monday, so you know what that means...it's time for another post from your favourite pink-tutu-wearing, travel-loving ballerina, Emma!

This week, we're heading back to the concrete jungle, New York City! And this week's post marks a very special milestone: #524! That's right, 524 whole blog posts from this Derbyshire girl living the dream in the Big Apple.

Now, where to even begin?!

I landed in New York on Friday night, and I swear, my heart still feels like it's soaring from that taxi ride through the streets of Manhattan. The yellow cabs, the towering skyscrapers, the buzz of excitement - it's intoxicating!

The show must go on… but first, fashion!

Before I even started thinking about shows, I had to get my fashion fix! No trip to New York is complete without a trip to Bloomingdale's, right? I swear, I could spend days in that store! They had everything! A whole section of tutus! A whole rack of gorgeous ballet shoes! A truly decadent pink polka-dot dress that had my name written all over it! Of course, it made it home with me… my purse was a bit lighter, but hey, what's a bit of extra baggage for some fabulously chic attire?

A ballet lover's dream

Now, for the real reason I'm in New York City - the ballet!

Let's talk about that magnificent Met Opera, darlings! A magical, awe-inspiring setting for a world-class ballet. This week's programme? The one and only "Swan Lake"! Honestly, how divine! This classic ballet is just SO romantic!

Every pirouette, every pas de deux was perfect. I felt tears welling up in my eyes, but don't worry, I wiped them away with my new pink polka-dot handkerchief! There's something about ballet that always fills me with a mixture of emotion. It's so graceful, so passionate. It just speaks to my soul.

And then there's the beauty of it all. The intricate costumes, the shimmering backdrops, the amazing orchestra - it's like stepping into another world.

But enough about the ballet! What would a trip to New York City be without experiencing some of the incredible Broadway shows?

This week, I caught "The Lion King." Oh my goodness! I still feel like I'm in that African savanna! The set design, the costumes, the music, it's simply incredible. It truly is the best musical I have seen in years.

A slice of life in the City that Never Sleeps

This past week was a real whirlwind! But of course, there's no journey through New York without an afternoon wandering through Central Park, surrounded by the bustle of life in this vibrant city.

There were picnics on blankets with adorable dachshunds on leashes, joggers zipping past, and even a little serenade from a street performer. The afternoon light shining through the leaves on the trees was absolutely beautiful! I swear, Central Park was even more gorgeous than I imagined!

Then there were the museums! My oh my, those museum cafes. A croissant and a cup of chai in the MoMA - what could be better?

Of course, my wanderings would never be complete without a trip to the iconic Times Square. Those dazzling lights just take your breath away. Every square inch was overflowing with colour and energy. I just loved it! I even had to stop for a souvenir picture with a life-size cut-out of my idol, Liza Minnelli! And while I was there, I noticed this fabulous vintage tutu shop tucked away in a side alley! You could get lost in the racks and racks of gorgeous tulle. My friend Maggie told me I should pick up a few more tutus, saying that New York never had enough tutus. But with my suitcase already packed full, I had to resist!

Traveling like a true New Yorker

Of course, I can't forget the metro. It's the best way to get around the city. So, grab a hot pretzel from a street vendor, hop on the subway, and embrace the craziness. A word of warning: It gets SO hot! Just a small downside to being underground all the time. But with all the amazing sights and experiences packed into such a small space, you can't beat it!

And finally, no trip to New York City would be complete without a bagel and a cup of coffee! The smells in the bagel shops are enough to make your mouth water! I even spotted this amazing cupcake shop with these crazy colourful decorations, and the cupcakes were actually shaped like tutus. I just had to get a dozen! I figured my fellow Tutu-lovers back in Derbyshire would appreciate it!

The Pink Tutu Takeover?

New York City, with its bustling streets and the contagious energy of its people, has just been absolutely electric. But as much as I've been enjoying the bright lights and excitement of the city, the greatest reward of travelling comes from sharing it all with you.

And guess what? This is my last post for a while - I'm finally going home to see my family! I need to give those Derbyshire hills a bit of love too!

Don't worry, though, I'll be back soon. Maybe even with a new addition to my tutu collection!

Until then, remember my golden rule:

Wear a pink tutu with confidence!

You can achieve anything, even conquering the most amazing cities!
