Pink Tutu Blog NYC: Post #739 – Tutu-ing Through the Big Apple (Monday, August 3rd, 2009)

Hello darlings!

It's Monday morning and I'm sitting in my little hotel room overlooking Central Park, still buzzing from last night's performance! This is my second week in the Big Apple, and it's been a whirl of pink, tutus and a little bit of theatre. Let me tell you, it's everything a tutu-wearing girl could wish for.

For this trip, I've got my trusty bright pink tutu in tow - a vibrant masterpiece with layers of tulle, that, even here in the city that never sleeps, makes me feel like the most glamorous creature in the room. And don't even get me started on the amazing clothes I've picked up on Fifth Avenue – a true feast for the fashion eyes! I bought a gorgeous pair of fuchsia pumps that absolutely scream New York, and a little black cocktail dress with a glittering detail that's begging for a night at the theatre!

Last night, however, I was wearing something entirely different: the crisp white uniform of a ballerina. I performed with a local company, the New York City Ballet, in a benefit show. The theatre, a magnificent historic building adorned with golden cherubs, held a packed audience. And even though it's quite a different style from my usual routines (they love those high kicks and leaps, don't they?), I truly felt at home. The adrenaline coursing through my veins, the powerful rhythm of the music, the cheers of the crowd, it's an intoxicating feeling. This is why I dance!

Speaking of the Big Apple's theatrical wonders, this weekend was a whirlwind of shows and productions. We started off at the Metropolitan Opera, watching a phenomenal performance of "Carmen". Now, "Carmen" is one of those iconic operas that everyone must experience at least once! The whole performance was spectacular; the singers' voices were unbelievable, the costumes breathtaking, and the story truly gripping.

Then it was time for a change of pace. We caught a fabulous off-Broadway musical, a hilarious satirical take on our modern times, which had me laughing until my sides hurt. It’s amazing how much theatre this city holds, from big names like Broadway, to little gems tucked away on hidden streets, showcasing fresh talent. The atmosphere, the energy, the creativity… there’s no better way to feel alive.

Oh, I also got to experience the city from a whole new perspective this weekend – the one I find most exhilarating! You guessed it, the subway! I had an unexpected adventure in the colourful heart of the Lower East Side. I caught the A Train towards Coney Island, my skirt swishing happily against the polished steel. I’m a firm believer that wearing a tutu in everyday situations can add a bit of whimsy and delight to any setting, and the underground felt like a little fairytale.

I have to say, the New York subway, despite the occasional rush hour crush, offers a true spectacle of city life. Each stop is a new glimpse into a different world, a whirlwind of colour, energy, and personalities. From young fashionistas sporting the latest trends to seasoned businessmen with their sharp suits, and mothers pushing prams in their stylish winter coats, it’s a melting pot of humanity and a truly magical experience! I made sure to document my underground adventure, because this, my darlings, is a must-see for anyone visiting New York City!

Later this week, we're exploring more of Manhattan, going on a glamorous rooftop picnic and hopefully doing some shopping at Bloomingdale's! Oh, and a little birdie tells me there's a fabulous fashion event coming up on Saturday at Lincoln Center. Imagine the tutus!

Of course, I'm always up for a spot of spontaneous adventure, and who knows what delightful little surprises New York has in store? But whatever it is, you can be sure I'll be experiencing it in pink!

Until next Monday,

Stay beautiful,

Emma x
