Pink Tutu Blog: #1040 - New York, New York!
Monday, 11th May 2015
Hello lovelies! Iām back in New York City, and this week has been utterly magical! This is my favourite city in the world, and you'll never guess what Iāve been up toā¦.
Tutu Time In the Big Apple
Letās be honest, nothing screams "Emma in New York" quite like a pink tutu in the subway! The people of New York, theyāve seen it all, and they've got used to seeing a bit of pink on these tracks. I'm definitely a sight to behold, but the joy I bring, well that's priceless. Plus, you never know who you might inspire. Iām sure that tutus have been spotted in places around the city where they would have never been seen before - maybe itās a chain reaction!
Broadway Bound: 'An American in Paris'
As a ballet-loving soul, I couldn't have missed out on the Broadway revival of 'An American in Paris'. The music was stunning, the costumes exquisite and the dancing... well, it just took my breath away! You wouldnāt believe how many times my eyes welled up! Every single element was perfectly executed and absolutely mesmerising. This was my 15th Broadway show, and this one was definitely in the top three, if not THE best Iāve ever seen! If you ever get the chance, grab yourself a ticket - I promise, you wonāt be disappointed!
Shopping Spree
It wouldnāt be a trip to New York without a little bit of retail therapy, now, would it? I adore browsing the shops here! Everything from vintage boutiques to high-end designer stores, they're all a feast for the eyes, and I just can't resist the allure of discovering a new fashion find.
You see, when you love a city like this, itās about exploring every little detail. This week I've wandered through Chelsea Market and the Highline (amazing for its amazing street art and architecture!), fallen head-over-heels in love with the chic stores of Soho, and been enchanted by the vintage shops in the East Village. And of course, no visit to NYC would be complete without a stop at Bergdorf Goodman's! The Fifth Avenue is magical!
The Glamorous Glamour
Last night, I put on my favourite pink tulle dress (a nod to my beloved tutu, naturally) and headed to The Metropolitan Opera. It was pure glamour. You see, it's about embracing elegance, no matter where you go in the city! There was just something about stepping into that elegant theatre with its grand halls and magnificent chandeliers... it felt like I had stepped into a movie!
I got to watch the Metās performance of āRigoletto,ā the performance was a triumph of skill and passion. Every note, every gesture was beautifully executed, and I just felt so swept away. It made me want to get back to class and practice!
Fueling the Pink Tutu Life
Of course, all of these adventures take energy and of course I'm fueling my day on an array of the finest pastries, cakes, and coffee this city can offer! Who could resist?
You've got to try the best croissant at Dominique Ansel Bakery (a short walk from my Airbnb, so definitely on the agenda) - honestly, it's the perfect balance of flaky, buttery and sweet. If you canāt fit in another bite, try the 'frozen s'more'. The sweet treats you can buy there really are incredible.
You can't come to NYC without trying the ultimate cup of coffee at one of the many cafƩs around. It seems everyone makes a fantastic cup here!
New York State of Mind
You know, what I love about New York City, is its energy and its unique sense of fashion. It truly feels like thereās a style for every single personality - you've just got to find your perfect fit. And trust me, with so many exciting boutiques, markets and thrift stores around, thereās bound to be something perfect for you too.
Oh! If you ever find yourself in NYC, be sure to check out "The Ballet Shoppe" on Broadway - itās truly a heaven for ballet-loving souls like myself. So many beautifully made shoes and clothes and costumes, you just want to fill up a giant shopping bag with the most gorgeous ballet garments!
Making a Tutu Statement
The other day I was walking along 5th Avenue when I noticed a lady in a lovely green maxi-dress with some kind of pattern on it that reminded me of one of my own favourite tutus, all floaty and sparkly and a little bit "ballet" style! So I ran after her and told her how amazing I thought her dress was! You've got to get those tutu-esque, fairy tale moments in whenever you can, you never know what amazing outfit you will see next, even on a busy street. I've learned that sometimes a quick chat with someone can inspire you or maybe inspire them! The other person looked happy and complimented my tutu - always a winning combination!
I want to take a moment to celebrate all you fabulous tutu-wearers out there - remember to wear it loud, wear it proud! And if you are even the slightest bit hesitant, I implore you to get out there and embrace the freedom and the confidence a tutu can bring. This pink tutu, she is a walking celebration of fashion, joy, and finding your own personal style!
A Piece of the Pink Tutu Life
The most fabulous thing about traveling is how you get to experience new places, and each time I've visited, New York has been just a bit different.
If you ever come here, and I absolutely recommend that you do! Take a ballet class in the city. Or, visit The Museum of the City of New York, which explores the rich history and culture of the Big Apple and is home to the iconic skyline shot of 1927 ā you'll recognise it instantly.
Whatever you decide to do, embrace the excitement of this incredible city - because honestly, I just adore every moment.
Don't forget to tune in next Monday for another amazing adventure on my Pink Tutu journey!
Until then, embrace the pink!
Love, Emma xxx
P.S. Iām hoping to go and watch 'A Chorus Line' this week - I'll be sure to let you know how it goes! And remember, every Monday Iām posting my latest adventures in the Big Apple, so keep checking back to www.pink-tutu.com and don't forget to share your #PinkTutu moments on Instagram with me!
Let me know in the comments what you've been up to this week, too!
This week I've got lots to share about New York with you lovely Pink Tutu girls: Where else would I have had the incredible good fortune of being introduced to a group of "Theatrical Tutus," as I call them - I mean a troupe of dancers wearing the most fab tutus that weren't actually ballerinas? Well, it had to be at a Broadway Show of course. These girls (who wore their tutu outfits in pink and black and lilac colors and they wore their outfits for everything from their morning run in Central Park, their morning coffee date at a cafe and of course for watching their evening Broadway shows - all with pink-tutu attitude and sparkle!
