As a Derbyshire lass at heart, I find it truly fascinating to compare life here in the Big Apple to what I'm used to back in the UK. While Derbyshire has its own charm, there's an undeniable buzz in New York that makes me feel alive! And, honestly, who wouldn't be energised by the constant whirl of events, the dazzling displays of fashion, and the incredible food scene?

This week has been a whirlwind of activity, packed with shows, shopping sprees, and even some sneaky ballet classes. Of course, all dressed in my favourite pink tutu, no less!

The first thing I had to conquer when I landed in New York was the subway. As you know, I adore the iconic red double-decker buses of London, but the subway in New York? It’s a whole new beast! I’m not sure how I feel about it, to be honest. While it's certainly a quick and convenient way to navigate the city, navigating the crowds with my tutu – especially in peak hour – has been quite the experience! I’ve found myself quite literally holding on for dear life, making sure my tutu doesn't get caught on any handles or get stepped on by a particularly enthusiastic businessman on his way to Wall Street.

Despite the slight hiccups, I'm definitely impressed by how accessible and extensive the subway system is. The vibrant art murals lining the walls of some stations also provide some surprisingly pretty views - making them more than just transport tunnels. Plus, the iconic “I ♥ NY” symbol can’t help but put a smile on your face.

This week I treated myself to the magic of Broadway, attending a performance of “Hamilton” – which, I confess, I found utterly gripping. The energy was electric! I loved the modern, fast-paced style, the catchy music, and, of course, the incredible costumes! The vibrant colours, textures, and clever designs just further prove that stage fashion truly holds its own as a form of art. I’m actually tempted to add a touch of “Hamilton” inspired fashion to my own wardrobe – just imagine a bold red cape and a chic top hat!

Now, while Broadway’s grand stage definitely deserves all the hype it gets, New York’s underground theatre scene shouldn't be overlooked. In fact, I’ve found myself enchanted by the smaller, more intimate theatre spaces where local talent takes centre stage. The energy in these spaces is different, with an air of experimentation and an audience that's fully engaged with the actors on a very personal level. It's honestly something that has rekindled my love for the raw emotion and human connection that a well-crafted play offers.

And yes, you guessed it, I attended these performances in a bright pink tutu – it definitely adds to the entertainment! After all, it's all about embracing your individuality and showcasing your style, isn't it? You wouldn’t believe how energetic the city’s dancers are! I was mesmerised by their raw passion and talent. Of course, as a true dance enthusiast, I simply had to try my hand at a few styles.

The first class was in hip-hop. It was absolutely fantastic – not only for the challenging routines and the dynamic music but also for the community spirit among the dancers. We laughed, we moved, and we pushed ourselves to reach new heights. This was followed by a contemporary ballet session that explored grace and fluidity, pushing me to reconnect with my core strength.

There's truly a special energy in the New York dance community. From the studio owners to the students, it's clear that they all have a profound passion for dance. This is something I find utterly inspiring. Seeing their commitment and creativity gives me a boost and reminds me to always embrace new challenges with a smile.

You know I'm obsessed with finding the most exquisite fashion treasures! In this realm, New York is a wonderland of trends, styles, and possibilities! This week, I've been having a blast exploring some of the city's famous department stores – with my trusty pink tutu in tow, naturally! I particularly loved a boutique nestled away in SoHo called “Tutus & Tootsies”. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for quirky and eye-catching pieces with a playful flair! The shopkeeper even suggested adding a splash of pink to my everyday wardrobe – she pointed out a gorgeous pale pink blouse with delicate lace details, a whimsical pink handbag with silver embellishments, and even a chic pink pencil skirt! It was a moment of total sartorial enlightenment!

I’ve been trying a new slice every day (don't judge, it’s just too delicious to resist). My personal favourite is a bakery near the Empire State Building, which makes an incredibly decadent strawberry cheesecake with a light, fluffy base and a heavenly, sweet-and-tart berry topping. Oh, my, it’s simply heavenly!

It seems like everyone in New York has a hidden gem they’re willing to share with a curious soul like me. Just yesterday, I stumbled upon a small family-run cafe tucked away on a quiet side street, serving the best homemade cinnamon rolls in the world! I must admit, these sweet, cinnamon-infused spirals were a little indulgence that I savoured with every bite.

And as always, the people of New York are amazing! The energy, the humour, and the endless conversations about the latest shows, fashions, and cultural trends keep me utterly captivated.

I'll be honest: leaving the city feels bittersweet, but the memories will last a lifetime. The bustling streets, the incredible theatre experiences, the laughter and creativity, and those delicious cheesecakes – all of these things leave a lasting impression. As I prepare to return to the UK, I’m already looking forward to the day I return to this captivating city.
