Hello darlings! I'm Emma, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, and I'm thrilled to be back in the Big Apple for another week of dancing, fashion, and fun!
This Monday finds me feeling utterly invigorated after a weekend spent in the whirlwind that is New York City. Honestly, the energy here is electric!
It all started with a glorious Friday evening, spent in the luxurious setting of the Metropolitan Opera. As I mentioned last week, I secured a spot in the chorus for the opening of a new ballet production, and let me tell you, performing in such a prestigious venue was a true dream come true. I mean, who can resist a spot on that legendary stage? The sheer joy of expressing myself through dance surrounded by a passionate audience was simply exhilarating.
The choreography was spectacular - a beautiful blend of classic balletic steps and bold, contemporary moves. We rehearsed endlessly in the weeks leading up to the performance, and it was simply rewarding to finally unveil our hard work on opening night. Plus, the entire experience gave me a chance to wear the most gorgeous tulle tutu – it had the most exquisite floral appliqué – truly a sight to behold. ( I mean, have I mentioned I have a bit of a penchant for pink tutus?).
Afterwards, the feeling was almost unreal – I was on a high for days, just reveling in the pure joy of being a part of something truly special.
However, the real magic of NYC begins when you leave the theatre behind and immerse yourself in the energy of the city streets. My week hasn't been about grand opera alone, oh no, I've been busy soaking up everything the city has to offer. A whirlwind of exploration!
Now, if you know anything about my penchant for all things sparkly and pretty, you'll understand the thrill that filled my heart when I stumbled upon a vintage boutique hidden away in SoHo. Rows upon rows of fabulous clothes - imagine silks and satins, sequins and lace, with a hint of old-fashioned glamour - it was truly an Aladdin's cave of delights. Naturally, I snagged a few beautiful pieces that were just screaming my name. (A sequined silver dress and a feathered boa that were begging to take to the dance floor). I can’t wait to showcase them at the next big dance event I can find.
Of course, a girl can’t survive on fashion alone. So on Saturday, I indulged my love for the delicious, sweet treats New York City is known for. A trip to the famed Magnolia Bakery in Midtown was in order! It felt like stepping straight onto a set from "Sex and the City" – my favourite show growing up - the pink and white striped facade and the perfectly frosted cupcakes made for the perfect Instagram-worthy moment. The "Banana Pudding" cupcake was pure perfection! It had everything a girl could wish for: vanilla cake, sweet banana pudding, and just enough creamy frosting to top it all off!
But I wouldn’t be true to my passion for dance if I didn’t incorporate that into my weekend plans, would I?
Now, if you're looking for a truly immersive dance experience, look no further than the Broadway shows New York City has to offer. This weekend I was lucky enough to see "On the Town" – a classic American musical full of dazzling choreography, infectious tunes and the perfect dose of New York charm. Let me tell you, the tap dance numbers nearly brought the house down! It was absolutely phenomenal – it reminded me why I am so drawn to the pure power and energy of dance. It filled my heart with such a special kind of magic, the kind you only get in New York City. I found myself captivated by every move, every song. I practically wanted to leap onto the stage and join in the fun!
Sunday afternoon was dedicated to exploring the heart of the city. Now, the NYC metro has to be my favourite way to navigate this fast-paced metropolis. From the brightly coloured carriages to the diverse, bustling crowds, it’s like being part of a living, breathing artwork. This past weekend, the trains carried me through bustling Times Square with its vibrant billboards, past the soaring towers of Manhattan's skyline, and right into the centre of Central Park – a little haven of green in the middle of all the concrete.
It was a perfect spot for a quiet afternoon picnic. The fresh air, the beautiful trees, and the sounds of birds chirping filled me with an almost-dreamy feeling of serenity – a much needed contrast to the high-energy excitement that filled the city!
However, you won't find me stuck in a park for too long! With a new week comes new opportunities to explore the boundless creative energy of this amazing city. On Tuesday, I’m headed to the Dance Theatre Workshop in the East Village to catch an up-and-coming contemporary dance company's showcase. You know me, I can't resist any opportunity to soak up the latest trends in dance!
This evening I’m looking forward to spending time with my good friend Ava who I’ve met through the online ballet community. I first stumbled upon her incredible ballet blog while scrolling through Instagram, and our shared passion for all things pink tutu-related sparked a long-lasting friendship! This evening we’re taking our love for all things ballerina to the iconic Barneys New York for an exciting window display of some new designer pieces. She’s actually helping them style their displays to capture a whimsical, magical ballet theme!
Later this week, I have some very exciting plans that involve a private ballet performance. Let’s just say I’ve been contacted by an intriguing theatre director who is fascinated by my pink tutu and my love for performance. Needless to say, this could turn into an amazing opportunity - one that could lead to something even bigger - and I’ll be sure to give you all the juicy details next week.
Oh, and speaking of exciting opportunities! To make a little more cash to fund my trips (after all, travel costs can be a little steep!) I'm also looking to book more performance gigs for my Derbyshire-based troupe. You know the drill - we're a team of amazing dancers who all share a passion for creating beautiful ballet routines and for… well, let's be honest, looking absolutely fabulous in our pink tutus. I'm hoping this trip will inspire me with a new set of dance routines and some incredible costuming inspiration. Because there is no denying: it’s never too late to unleash a little bit of pink tutu magic, especially when you're in the city that never sleeps.
That’s all from me for this week! I’ll be back next Monday with a full rundown of my week in New York, so stay tuned! In the meantime, keep dancing your way through life, spreading that pink tutu magic wherever you go!
Until next week, darlings!
Xoxo
Emma
