Prague Calling: Ballet, Babes and Bows - Post 681!
Bonjour, darlings! It's Emma, back from a whirlwind trip to the most magical city I've ever seen - Prague! As always, I'm absolutely overflowing with tales of tutus, trains, and oh-so-stylish finds. Settle in, my dears, this is a long one!
You see, last week I finally made it to this breathtaking city, known for its charming bridges, ancient castles, and - dare I say - its blossoming ballet scene! I mean, can you imagine anything more perfect? Imagine strolling through cobbled streets, a symphony of medieval architecture on either side, all while your trusty pink tutu billows in the gentle breeze - sigh. I might be getting ahead of myself, though, let's start at the beginning.
My Grand Journey Begins... On Four Hooves!
Yes, darling, this is where it gets exciting! For my journey to Prague, I took a pony express! Not a horse-drawn carriage, darling, though I have ridden in those too. I mean a pony express train, a magical little contraption which zips along the picturesque countryside of Germany and the Czech Republic! Let me tell you, dear reader, nothing beats the feeling of fresh air rushing through your hair, your little toes wiggling in the seat, and the world flashing by in a kaleidoscope of emerald fields and impossibly charming villages.
It felt like stepping into a fairy tale, just like the ballet classics we adore. And I felt every inch the ballerina on a grand adventure! Of course, no good adventure can be without its own unique soundtrack. So I was absolutely delighted to discover the wonders of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra streaming on my vintage iPod. Their interpretations of Dvorak and Smetana created such an atmosphere on the train - truly an auditory masterpiece, you see.
Prague, Where Fairy Tales Come Alive
When we arrived at the station, it felt like entering another world. This magnificent city, with its terracotta rooftops, gothic spires, and winding alleys, was an intoxicating symphony of sights, smells, and sounds! I immediately felt a tingle of inspiration, dear reader. I simply had to do a photoshoot in those magical cobbled streets.
Of course, the main goal of this trip was to experience the local ballet scene! You're probably thinking, Emma, haven't you been to a thousand ballet shows? You're right, dear, I have! But there's something special about immersing yourself in a culture, especially one with such a vibrant dance history as Prague.
Dancing My Way to Prague's Heart
After settling into my little, utterly adorable, vintage-style hotel room (I simply adore the retro look!) - my suitcase bursting with an array of ballet-themed outfits (pink tutus and feather boas, of course) - I went on the hunt for the city's ballet gems! I quickly found the National Theatre and I simply had to get a peek at their calendar! My jaw almost dropped when I saw they had Swan Lake performing that evening!
- Swan Lake*! The ultimate tale of love, betrayal, and of course, ballet! To be in Prague, a city so full of its own magical stories, to watch Tchaikovsky's timeless masterpiece? I felt like I had won the ballet lottery! And speaking of lucky finds...
Shopping Adventures with a Side of Ballet History
Of course, dear readers, I wouldn't be me if I didn't explore the city's fashion scene, and boy, was it divine! I ventured into the Old Town Square, with its stunning gothic architecture and the iconic Astronomical Clock. Imagine my delight when I stumbled upon an amazing vintage boutique called 'La Belle Epoque'. It was like walking into a 19th century dream! Rows upon rows of luxurious silk dresses, hats that resembled tiny masterpieces, and lace gloves - absolute bliss for this sartorial enthusiast!
As I was browsing the exquisite vintage hats - just like those you'd see worn by the graceful ballerinas in the early 20th century, darling - I got chatting with the owner, a sweet, wizened woman named Ivana. She told me about the rich history of fashion in Prague, and about how it evolved alongside the city's thriving ballet culture! I was absolutely fascinated! Ivana, darling, shared with me so many amazing tidbits, like the fact that Prague’s Ballet School (dating back to the 18th century!), had its own dressmakers who designed elaborate costumes for their ballerinas. Talk about an incredible connection between fashion and dance, you see!
Inspired by this conversation, darling, I picked up an elegant, hand-crafted hat with an oversized pink feather that seemed almost tailor-made for my pink tutu. It added the perfect touch of glamour and vintage elegance, don't you think? Of course, this meant an impromptu photoshoot in the square was inevitable, under the watchful gaze of the astronomical clock. You can bet that these pictures will be up on my website very soon!
An Evening Under the Spotlight
Now, my darling friends, about that performance of Swan Lake! Oh my goodness! The National Theatre is simply a masterpiece of architecture, both on the outside and in. The opulent decor, the velvety red seating - truly, a palace fit for a ballet queen, and a dream come true for this ballet aficionado!
The performance itself was breathtaking. Every plié, every jeté, every graceful arabesque was executed with an artistry that simply took my breath away. It was as if the dancers were dancing on air! I loved seeing how the choreography drew upon classical ballet techniques, while still adding the distinctive flavour of Prague's own dance heritage. The dancers, so beautiful and ethereal, transformed into ethereal swans, each with their own grace and storytelling, just like the fairy tales woven into the architecture of the city itself. It truly made me believe in magic again!
My Tutu Travels on!
So, my dears, there you have it. A whirlwind of tutu-tastic travels! I may be back in Derbyshire, England now, but Prague has left an imprint on my soul that I'll never forget. It is a city where beauty is woven into every cobbled stone, and where a pink tutu feels as natural as the enchanting tunes drifting from every corner.
Stay tuned, my little tutu enthusiasts, because I have so much more to share. From the decadent ballet-themed cakes I enjoyed, to the incredible Prague Castle and the charming cafes tucked away in hidden alleys, my trip to Prague is far from over!
Until next Wednesday, keep on twirling, darling!
Xoxo, Emma
