Winter Ballet Season in Altrincham

Altrincham's Tutu Winter Wonderland: A Dance Review

Oh my god, you guys! The festive season is finally here and it's not just about mince pies and Mariah Carey, no no no, it's the glorious return of Tutu Winter! Altrincham's ballet scene has absolutely outdone itself this year, and I'm here to spill the tea, or rather, the glitter.

Every year I get so excited when the winter ballet season rolls around. It’s like a whole other world opens up, full of sequins, tutus, and stories told through breathtaking dance. And this year, Altrincham has really gone all out. Think fairytale landscapes, dramatic lighting, and a soundtrack that had me wanting to dance right down the aisle!

Let me tell you, my inner ballerina has been having a total blast. This season has truly been a feast for the senses. From the traditional grandeur of The Nutcracker at The Altrincham Garrick, to the contemporary twist on Sleeping Beauty at The Dunham Theatre, every show was like stepping into a different universe.

Altrincham Garrick’s The Nutcracker:

Seriously, folks, The Nutcracker is the ultimate Christmas ballet classic. It’s a beautiful blend of traditional storytelling and pure, raw artistry. I was completely transported to a magical winter wonderland, all thanks to the exquisite set design and incredible choreography. There was just something so incredibly enchanting about seeing those little ballerinas twirling in their snow-white tutus – pure perfection! Plus, the live orchestra was absolutely divine. It added an extra layer of magic to the entire experience. The whole audience was clearly caught up in the story, mesmerised by every twist and turn.

The Dunham Theatre’s Sleeping Beauty:

But you know me, I also love a bit of edge. The Dunham Theatre’s contemporary interpretation of Sleeping Beauty had me hooked. I was intrigued by the fresh, modern choreography that brought a whole new meaning to classic themes. The whole set felt very urban and edgy, with its dark and moody lighting. There was even some killer disco music thrown in at one point – just my style! I love that the creators were willing to take a classic like Sleeping Beauty and make it feel relevant for today. The main ballerina's contemporary spin on the sleeping beauty’s struggles was raw and emotional, a real powerhouse performance.

Of course, the absolute highlight for any tutu enthusiast (that's me!) was the array of stunning tutus. From the fluffy snowdrift-inspired tutus in The Nutcracker to the modern, layered, and experimental ones in Sleeping Beauty, each show was a showcase for fabulous ballet design. It was like my eyes were getting a gourmet feast.

I'm pretty sure my inner five-year-old self, the one who would wear her princess dresses all day and dream of twirling in front of a mirror, was having a full-on meltdown in the best way possible.

So, there you have it, folks! The #tutuwinter season in Altrincham has been everything I hoped for and more. From the enchanting storytelling to the incredible talent and jaw-dropping outfits, it's definitely a must-see for any dance lover. Go on, treat yourself and experience the magic. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Until next time, happy twirling!
