This city really knows how to embrace the festive spirit, and I'm absolutely buzzing with excitement to share all the fabulous things happening on the ballet front.
The moment the crisp, cool air of December hits, a shiver of excitement goes down my spine. Winter's here, which means ballet season is officially underway! As soon as those festive lights begin to twinkle in Plaça Catalunya, I know it’s time to pull out my finest pink feather boa, grab my trusty ballet shoes, and head for the theatre. This season, Barcelona's theatre scene is absolutely bursting with ballet delights, and honestly, I can barely contain my inner ballerina.
First up, “The Nutcracker,” a timeless classic. This show is pure enchantment, a perfect blend of breathtaking choreography and a truly magical atmosphere. I love the sweet innocence of the story and the delightful dance sequences. Plus, there’s a whole lot of sparkle involved, and you know how much I love that! Next on the agenda is a contemporary ballet masterpiece, “Momentum” which really takes things to the next level! Forget those traditional ballerinas you might think of, this one features dynamic, powerful movements that showcase incredible strength and athleticism. It’s the kind of show that will leave you wanting more, your heart racing and your soul soaring. Think ballet, but with a heavy dose of cool, modern vibe. It’s basically ballet meeting disco in a glorious dance showdown, and trust me, I'm living for it.
But it's not just about the major productions – there's an abundance of smaller, independent companies and workshops making their mark on the scene. Last week, I discovered "Barcelona Ballet Dreams," a group dedicated to supporting aspiring dancers, featuring their own interpretation of "Carmen." Honestly, you won't find passion and dedication like this anywhere else! It was a heartwarming performance with such raw energy, and it really showed the true spirit of the ballet world – the unwavering pursuit of passion.
And who needs an excuse to visit Gran Teatre del Liceu (aka the grandest, most opulent theatre in Barcelona, for you newcomers!). It's a real gem, and the location alone adds to the entire ballet experience. This place is seriously swanky. I'm talking stunning chandeliers, intricate details, plush red velvet seats – you name it!
Even if you don’t know much about ballet, you’ll fall in love with the energy of these performances. This city embraces art in all its forms, and you can feel it. It’s inspiring. Every performance leaves me buzzing with creativity, which means more fun dance classes, more fabulous tutus in my wardrobe (I can’t resist, honestly!), and more Instagram stories filled with #tutuwinter love.
The "Dance Barcelona" festival has become a must-visit for any ballet enthusiast, offering a programme jam-packed with masterclasses, workshops, and opportunities to connect with other passionate dance lovers like myself. They've got a wide variety of workshops from contemporary and flamenco to modern and hip-hop, perfect for those wanting to learn new skills, or for those who simply want to feel that gorgeous sense of liberation that dancing offers.
And you know me, I love to support budding talent! The "Rising Star" programme highlights talented young dancers who are about to make their big leap onto the professional stage, and I must say, it’s incredibly exciting to witness these amazing performers. You’ll often hear them say, “the best way to learn is to share!” and their passion is absolutely contagious. Plus, who knows, you might discover a future star before everyone else.
This year, I'm especially thrilled by "Winter Tutus: A Disco Ball." We're talking flaming tutus, vibrant sequins, a killer playlist that'll have you moving and grooving, and a whole lot of laughter! I'm already putting my disco-themed makeup kit together (pink, of course!) and my most flamboyant, glittery outfit (you guys know I've got options!).
