Winter Ballet Season in Berlin

Berlin: The Tutu Season is Upon Us! 🩰❄️

Hey gorgeous gals (and gents, if you're reading!),

The chill is in the air, the leaves are changing, and the pumpkin spice lattes are flowing - which can only mean one thing: it’s ballet season! Oh, the joy, the glitz, the tutus. I’m so excited for the return of this incredible, iconic, magical period of the year. You can always count on Berlin's winter ballet to be truly magical, and this year is no exception.

Opening Night Shenanigans

My heart practically skipped a beat as I stepped into the Staatsoper, its elegant facade twinkling under the twinkling Christmas lights of Unter den Linden. I felt like I'd stepped right into a fairytale. The excitement crackled through the air, almost as tangible as the shimmer of my sequined bag (that perfectly matched my new pink lipstick, by the way!)

We were treated to a truly breathtaking rendition of the classic "Swan Lake". I always find it fascinating how this timeless tale of love, betrayal, and the power of nature comes alive, especially through the masterful skill of the dancers. Those iconic swan movements, the ethereal grace of the prima ballerina, and those breathtaking leaps - simply magical!

Tutus & Tiaras (and a bit of disco!)

The "Sleeping Beauty" production was another real highlight. That tutu was everything! Imagine a cloud of billowing, blush-pink tulle, with delicate pearls cascading down its tiers - it was truly spectacular. I practically gasped with delight. It just felt so decadent, so dreamy! And you just knew that the whole audience, including myself, was completely enchanted by Princess Aurora's captivating performance.

And speaking of captivating, have I mentioned the choreography? The "Nutcracker" really impressed me this year, especially in its second act. There were flashes of modern movement, subtle pops of contemporary dance, which gave the familiar story a truly contemporary twist - kind of like a glamorous 1970s disco party! I found myself tapping my foot along to the energetic, playful vibe - it really gave the ballet a fresh, new energy, which felt totally in line with this exciting season.

Warmth and Sparkle

Afterward, we bundled up (with a little bit of added pink in the form of a statement scarf, of course!), headed to a cosy cafe for some decadent hot chocolate. Sharing stories and tips for the next ballet adventure always makes the magic of the season feel extra special.

Berlin’s ballet scene truly embodies the joy and wonder of winter. Every performance has a sense of community and warmth that melts away any winter blues, replacing them with excitement and awe. So, ladies and gents, grab your coats, put on your dancing shoes, and head out for a bit of tutuwinter magic!

Tips for your Tutu Season Adventures

  • Go Early: Avoid the queue for tickets, especially for popular productions, and maybe even grab a yummy pre-show dinner or a coffee from a cafe in the area.
  • Dress Up: Ballet is all about dressing up, so don’t be afraid to go all out. From your trusty LBD to your favourite vintage coat (with a pink statement scarf, obviously!), it's time to unleash your inner ballet diva.
  • Grab Your Crew: This is the perfect excuse to organise a girls night out (or, hey, guys can join in the fun too!). It’s a great opportunity to catch up and share your thoughts on the amazing performances, in between indulging in some yummy cocktails!
  • Explore New Works: Don't be afraid to venture beyond the classics and check out contemporary ballet productions, new works, and independent companies! There's so much talent out there waiting to be discovered.
  • Take Photos: But please be respectful of the performances. Try to avoid flash photography during the show, but do get your “tutuwinter” photos during the interval, after the show, or even as you get dressed up!
  • Spread the Love: Tag your ballet pics on social media with #tutuwinter #tutuseason and let the ballet-loving community know about all the fun you're having!

I can’t wait to experience the magic with you, gorgeous. The tutu season is just beginning - are you ready to let it sparkle?

See you there,

Emma xx
